What pre-op testing is ordered besides bowel prep?

HI. My surg is scheduled for 11/22 and I got the "packet" of info with my instructions for bowel prep the day before. The instructions also say they will call me to schedule pre-op testing. What is involved with that, no one has told me anything. I see my doc on the 16th for a pre-surg conversation and apparently I have my testing then....whatever than means. I am assuming a blood draw but not sure what else? Thanks!

Re: What pre-op testing is ordered besides bowel prep?

All I had was a CBC blood draw. If you haven't had a pap and/or pelvic in awhile, they may want to do that too. Since I had my annual in August, my pre-op testing only consisted of a small blood draw.

Depending on your age and medical history, they may order a chest Xray and/or an EKG. Also depending on your Dr and type surgery, they may draw a crossmatch in case you need blood----along with your other lab tests. I had blood labs, EKG, and crossmatch done, plus the Xray for a subsequent surgery.

Re: What pre-op testing is ordered besides bowel prep?

in addition to the blood tests, sometimes they'll want an ekg. I think the longest thing for me at my hospital pre-op was the paperwork...

Re: What pre-op testing is ordered besides bowel prep?

They do a blood count plus type and cross match from a blood draw to ensure that if you need blood during surgery, they know what type and have it on hand.

They get your weight (the anesthesiologist needs this, and many women lie so they cannot rely on the number you put down on your paperwork ).

They check your blood pressure, and they may ask for a urine sample and do a quickie dipstick for sugar and/or protein in the urine.

They also do a pregnancy test, which is required by law.

Some women also have an EKG and/or chest x-ray; I had neither.

I hope this helps! Good luck with your surgery.

Re: What pre-op testing is ordered besides bowel prep?

I had blood work, ekg, blood pressure checked, height and weight done, temperature taken and urine. They wanted to know all medications I took, both prescription and over the counter, doses, reason for medication. I also met with the hospital pharmacist so he could let me know what the hospital could provide or what meds to bring with me. I met with the anesthesiologist to discuss what he would use and if I had complications from any other surgeries.

Good luck.

For me they took blood, did a nose swab (easy, no pain) for staph. She gave me a special soap t wash with the night before and morning of surgery. They also got me pre registered/checked in for the surgery day (insurance info, but they still needed my ID and insurance card the day of). Overall, really easy.
