When/what can you eat? When/what can you eat?

Re: When/what can you eat?

My surgery was delayed a few hours (had been scheduled for 1pm as it was!) so I was hungry! I asked the nurse before I forgot (once I got there from recovery) what food they had (I'd missed dinner, didn't want to be starving all night). She said they had juice, jello, soup/broth, then eventually pudding if/when I was up for it. So I asked for some juice and jello. The juice was so yummy (apple). I don't know exactly when I started on the jello, but slowly worked my way through it and another. Then eventually (4 am or so?) asked for soup. She gave me cream of chicken and I didn't like it.

Another aid (vitals tech/nurse?) brought me a broth that was good. Since I'd handled those all so well, my night nurse went ahead and ordered me a regular meal breakfast. It looked so good and I did eat a bit, but my throat was still icky from the tube, that everything (eggs, toast) felt dry and stuck. So I ate the apple sauce. My doc said not to rush it (came in around 11ish? before lunch I think). My lunch of a hamburger went much better. I went home that night right after my last meal came. I only ate some because they were trying to get it there before I left (it was some kind of meat/noodles thing w/mushrooms, veggies, roll, etc.).

So, all that said, if you're hungry let your nurse know you want some juice/jello, and they'll get you started. But it's really up to you and how you feel. You don't want to make yourself sick.

Re: When/what can you eat?

I had surgery last year and it wasn't til 4 in the afternoon. Honestly I wasnt very hungry I was more occupied with everything else. I didnt really eat until noon the next day. I ordered a chefs salad it was HUGE, a shake and I think a cookie. It tasted fine but once I started eating I wasn't nearly as hungry as I thought. It took days to regain my normal appitite. But I tried to stick with nonfatty foods and did fine.
