1st Surgery Ever and am nervous

Hi, First I want to thank everyone for their comments and sharing on this website. I've found lots of answers to my questions.
I'm scheduled for a TLH on 12/14/11 and cannot wait! I'm so tired of the extreme pain with my period that I can't take it anymore. It can't be normal for someone to have to take 19-20 ibuprofen a day to manage their pain, can it?
Anyway, I'm quite nervous about having surgery. I've never had surgery before and where as I'm fasinated by medical procedures and all of that stuff, I'm still nervous to have an IV and cath and everything. My DH has had 11 abdominal surgeries and I've been with him through them all so its his turn to take care of me during mine.

Re: 1st Surgery Ever and am nervous

It is perfectly normal to be nervous. This was my first big surgery too and I was very nervous. You will be so happy to not have those painful periods any longer. I can so relate to that!!
They took my catheter out the next morning after surgery (I was already knocked out when they put it in) and that didn't hurt at all. The IV came out the day after because I was getting antibiotics through it. I was in the hospital for 2 days.
And yes let your DH help's your turn to rest and be waited on!

Re: 1st Surgery Ever and am nervous

I had the same experience as dee2827. I sayed in hospital two nights. They put the catheter in after you're asleep in the OR. Mine was taken out the next morning. It's no big deal when they pull it out. My IV stayed in until they were discharging me. I had morphine in my IV for the first 24 hours and was given oral pain meds for the next 24 hours. I was sent home with Tylenol 3 and torodol for pain and swelling. Wish you the best with your surgery :-)

Re: 1st Surgery Ever and am nervous

This was my third surgery. They have modernized. I was given a blankie that I could adjust the warmth to. Due to meds, I felt no pain with catheter in or out. Also, the first time standing, the pain meds must have been in place because that wasn't painful. Of course, I had used the Hyster Sister website to read about exactly how to get up and move about. I am so glad I had all this knowledge as my nurse wasn't very helpful. Truthfully, I didn't need their assistance in my situation so it wasn't a problem. Overall, the whole experience was positive. You will do great sister!
