Re: Question on underwear

I like cotton underwear, so didn't end up using the mesh ones the hospital gave me (they were synthetic). I went out and got granny panties in 3 sizes. I had extra large fibroids, so I wasn't sure what size would fit. The first 3-4 weeks, I wore them on the loose size because anything against the incision was painful. As the swelling started going down, I was able to wear the smaller sizes I had bought. They were the 6-packs of Hanes from Target, so not to expensive. I didn't want to buy good underwear until I knew my final size. I did look at the boy cut since several women recommended them, but ultimately didn't buy them because the seam fell on my horizontal incision. Several women reported that you could find seamless underwear at Kohl's (for those living in the US).

Re: Question on underwear

I hadn't heard of the mesh ones until reading on here either; ok so the best idea is making sure I have comfortable large size underwear that I can hopefully manage to put on

One reason I wonder is reading that people keep coming to check the incision, which means lifting up the robe which means if there is no underwear being totally exposed - again, which is a really hard idea for me no matter how much the hospital staff might be used to it.

Re: Question on underwear

One of the best tips I read on this site pre-op was to get some undies one size bigger than I usually wear. I had 5 pairs I hadn't thrown out yet, from before losing weight, and they are what I'm still wearing almost 4 weeks post-op. Can't tolerate my "normal" size ones for more than a few minutes. The bigger ones both accommodate my swelly-belly, AND fit higher on the tummy (above waist if I need them to!)

I also dug out some knit pants with elastic waist that were 1 and 2 sizes too big and have been wearing them around the house.

Re: Question on underwear

I wore a pair of Depends (disposable adult diapers) to the hospital since I was still bleeding. That way, I didn't have to take them off -- the surgeon must have ripped them off me before surgery. I woke up with just a pad on after the surgery and switched to the mesh panties and a pad to get home. At home I switched to a pair of cotton "granny panties" which I used for only a day before switching back to my own tired and true bikinis. I like them the most 'cause I can push them down below my lowest incision making them the most comfortable.

Question on underwear

Probably so! I actually liked the mesh panties as well. They were just really comfortable. I wore tangas or cheekies as victorias secret calls them for the first few days that I came home. But I only have a slight pink bleeding when I pee so im back to thongs now on day 6.

Re: Question on underwear

Hi zadie, when the nurses check your pads they are very discreet and sensitive to your feelings/embarassment. With mine, I was laying in bed. I lifted the front of the robe, they dropped the pad down, had a quick look and then put it back again. Very quick and no big deal. I felt worse, peeing into a jug that was sitting in the toilet bowl, so they could then measure the amount of urine I was passing. Again though, they are very sensitive to us ladies!

Re: Question on underwear

I live in New Zealand and I got the mesh panties in hospital too!

Yay for those mesh panties! - I loved them, but just had the one pair. If I had realised how comfortable they would be long term, I'd have asked how to get more, or if they would have given me more.
I currently wear some old pairs I hadn't thrown out, where the waist elastic is stretched, and I find these comfortable. Tight things make me swell up..................still!

Re: Question on underwear

I wasn't given the mesh ones ...........I didn't have any on in the hospital, but I didn't bleed at all either. When I got home, I still didn't wear any because I had no discharge and none of my undies fit me because of the swelly belly. I even went out and bought the high cut cotton bikinis in a size larger than I normally wear. I had my mom go out and buy me some that were 3 sizes bigger so I wore those when I went out in public...I had to be careful though because I wear hip-hugger jeans and these panties went half way up my back , but they were comfy...didn't rub on my incision and fit around my swelly belly!
