To keep the ovaries or not to keep them

I am very torn. On one hand I have no real need to keep my ovaries but on the other hand I have no real need to get rid of them either. Early menopause is very common in my family so I know that should be coming very soon for me so with that in mind, do I keep my ovaries and hope nothing else goes wrong and they have to be removed or go ahead and just get rid of everything now in one shot. So confused. Have my pre op next week but I want to have some form of decision before I get there to finalize it. Any advice?

Re: To keep the ovaries or not to keep them

Ok, so I found some threads with my same question and concerns. I feel like keeping them is the best option at this point unless they look terrible when the doc gets in there. I feel much better now. I think I just needed to hear that I was not the only one freaking out about the decision that I was already leaning to. I do not want another surgery down the road as I have had many thus far because of my Crohns disease but if the chance down the road is small then I will go with that. Still going to discuss with doc next week but I feel my mind is made up at this point.

Re: To keep the ovaries or not to keep them

I say keep them. From what I've heard its better although you may need surgery in the future to remove them. Also depends on your age. What are your doctors thoughts? Mine wont remove them both. I have one the bothers me so I do plan it have it removed. Best of luck.

Re: To keep the ovaries or not to keep them

I am in the same boat, so to speak. I have my preop Monday morning. I am 33, have two "semi good" ovaries. I have chronic PCOS with ovary-full of "functional cysts." I am looking into my option, whether to keep or not to keep... Good luck to you.

Re: To keep the ovaries or not to keep them

I'm pretty certain I'm keeping mine. But to be sure I have considered everything I just signed up for the study that's at the top of the page. Some women have said it was very helpful to them. Kind of a win all around, you get to help them help other women, you get to go through their program and help you decide what to do, and you get $80.

Hey Whirlygig - I liked the video from the study. Just to let you know, the $80 comes in 2 installments in Amazon gift cards. I hope you find it useful.

There are a lot of pros and cons when it comes to making the ovary decision. I'm choosing to keep mine because heart disease and osteoporosis are very common in my family, cancer not so much. As long as they are healthy when my doctor gets in there, they are staying.

Please make the decision from an informed position.

Re: To keep the ovaries or not to keep them

I definitely will be keeping them. After a lot of thought and reading and talking to my mom who memopaused as 28 I think unless disease is present they are staying. Thanks for the replies!

Re: To keep the ovaries or not to keep them

Most female doctors will encourage you to keep them if possible and no medical reason not to. Getting rid of them completely mean immediate and full blown menopause - according to my physician. Some women have thought they were not doing any good only to find out they were indeed having hormonal benefits. Good luck on your decision and surgery! Hope you recovery is quick and easy!

Re: To keep the ovaries or not to keep them

My interview for the study is scheduled on Thurs. If you have an hour to do the interview it might help you make a decision. While I've pretty much decided to leave my ovaries I figured that it can't hurt to watch their video and maybe it will point out something I hadn't considered.

McLila-They didn't tell me it was Amazon cards but that's ok. You can buy almost anything at Amazon.
