surgery 11/30..changes and some are good!

I learned today that I will be having a TAH as opposed to the propsed LAVH. This was a bit of a surprise, but probably best in the long run.The good news is no bowel prep for me, just no food after midnight. All I can say is YIPEEEE on that one. So, now to lurk and read all of the TAH articles as I had been mostly reading the others. While still nervous, knowing more details is making it sit better with me. Praying that everyone gets good news and that we all come out the other side new, fantastic women!

Re: surgery 11/30..changes and some are good!

I didn't have to bowel prep. either. Don't think it's done in NZ.
I had a TAH/BSO.
Feel pretty good at 9 weeks post.op. Hope you will, too.

Not having bowel prep. may good in a way, but I do suggest you make sure you empty your bowels before you go in for surgery, however you do it - naturally, with nerves, was how I did it !!

The opiates will cause your bowel to go to sleep for a few days. If you have not had a BM beforehand, it will harden up while you are not "going", and you may need a suppository or other help. Stool softeners will help with the food you eat post-surgery but maybe not what is in the lower bowel.
Sorry to be gross about this, but I sure had 2 days of extreme constipation when I started going again.

There may be a good reason for bowel prep., I've since thought!

I wont know for three more weeks if I get the pleasure of a bowel prep or not. I'm hoping NOT.

Re: surgery 11/30..changes and some are good!

I have to take pain meds now, although not every day, so I know the benefit of the stool softeners. I had actually thought the same thing about the preop "going." Doc said to just not go crazy on food the day before and to try a fiber pill or stool softener and that would probably be enough to "go" before I get to OR. I had a ridculously painful experience with bowels and not going with a previous c-section and boy did I learn that lesson. So, I certainly agee; use the stool softeners (they are over the counter in US) and eat lightly the day or two. Good luck to you on your journey and keep the advice coming!
