Vaginal hysterectomy incision?

I have a question regarding vaginal hysterectomy. Do you always have to have a vaginal incision? My Dr refers to it as incision-less, but all sites I go to that describes the procedure, talks about a vaginal incision. That sounds scary, and I am not sure I want that. Just curious if anyone else knows. Thanks

Re: Vaginal hysterectomy incision?

A vaginal hysterectomy is almost always a total hysterectomy (meaning it includes removal of the cervix, which is the neck of the uterus). There is no external incision of you have "just" a hysterectomy and no anterior/posterior repairs. However, there is necessarily a large incision at the top of the vagina where the uterus is separated from the vagina and the surgeon creates the vaginal cuff by folding the top over and stitching. That incision is completely internal.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy, but I also had anterior and posterior repairs. Part of the posterior repair involved a large incision, basically an episiotomy, through the perineum. Not something you need to worry about if you're not having 'repair work' though.
