Question about bhrt

Hi. I am new to this site. I already love it though. My questions: Did any of you go on bhrt immediately after surgery? If so, how did you decide which one to start with? Also, what have you experienced as far as weight gain, if any, post-surgery and with bhrt's?

Re: Question about bhrt

I didnt go on right after surgery. It was about 5 weeks. I went on vivelle dot because it is a bioidentical and I heard great thing about it. Its worked wonders so far. I have not gained any weight yet but also have to be very careful on what I eat.

Re: Question about bhrt

I was started on vivelle dot .075 literally in the recovery room.
I have been using it for 16 months now. I like it but think I need to have it upped to .1 mg but gyn would not up it which is another story. So instead of changing it every 3.5 days I change it every 3 days and have seen some improvement.
As far as weight gain goes, I have gained a lot of weight since surgery, but I do not think it is due to the vivelle. I had comp. during surgery and have nerve damage to my right hip which has prevented me from being able to exercise due to the pain. I am waiting for an appointment with a BHRT specialist that will hopefully happen net month.
Best wishes on your upcoming surgery.

Re: Question about bhrt

Okay. So it sounds like Vivelle is good stuff. Does it have progesterone and testosterone in it as well or do you take that stuff separately if at all? Also, how open were your doctors to you going on Vivelle or just bhrt in itself?

Thank you so much for your responses

Re: Question about bhrt

Vivelle Dot doesn't have any testosterone or progesterone in it. It has bio-identical estradiol, estradiol being one of the three estrogens produced by the ovaries. Estrone and estriol are the other two.

Most of us in surgical menopause start out on estrogen only. After getting balanced on it, we can add progesterone and/or testosterone, one hormone at a time, depending on if there are symptoms that would indicate the need to add them. In the case of testosterone, it's a good idea to have free and total testosterone levels checked first.

My doctor was open to the idea of me using bio-identical hormones once I started expressing dissatisfaction with the Estratest HS which was the hormone therapy I started out using. He referred me to a compounding pharmacist and from there I was prescribed compounded estrogen, progesterone and eventually testosterone. Later, I ended up changing from compounded estrogen to Vivelle Dot, which I've been using for years now. I'm very pleased with it.

Of course what works well for some doesn't work well for others. You may have to experiment with dosing, method of delivery and various types of estrogen before you find what works best for you. Some women do very well on the non bio-identicals, too.

You might find it helpful to browse through this resource: Hormone Jungle Articles.

If there's any chance you can keep your ovaries, consider doing so

I hope this helps!
