When can I sing

Hi all,

I have a full hysterectomy (sorry - I'm unfamiliar with the acronyms) via DaVinci robot scheduled for 11/23. It's prophylactic for BRCA1 and I'm not ill. I have some gigs coming up and trying to figure out if I should be able to do them. The first two are 12/5 and 12/6 - singing for an hour each in a low stress environment. Then I have another on 12/10, standing and singing and playing keyboard for three hours.

I understand recovery from DaVinci surgery is pretty quick, but I'm a little concerned about fatigue and also that singing involves the abs quite a bit.

I'm in good physical condition and exercise regularly. Any idea what I can expect?

Thanks!

Eva

Re: When can I sing

I wouldn't do the gigs so soon. The initial recovery of the DaVinci may be shorter, but the full recovery time doesn't really change. Your abs will probably be a little sore still at two weeks. Based off of my own recovery, I would have been able to attend those events, but I wouldn't be able to while singing... unless, perhaps, sitting down. You get tired really quickly, even if you don't feel in pain. If only it were something that could be tentative... because it is best to base it off of how your feeling, recovery-wise.

Re: When can I sing

Singing requires a great deal of abdominal control. You may also have a sore throat after intubation for a few days. While daVinci is minimally invasive, it is still major surgery and you may not feel like singing for a while. My surgery is 11/29 and I turned down a casual gig on 12/13 because I didn't think I'd be up to it. I figure with swelly belly and healing I ternal stitches, I wouldn't be able to give my best performance.
We all heal differently though, and it would be a good idea to ask your doctor what she/he thinks.

Re: When can I sing

Thanks for the advice. I may be able to rest on a stool for the 12/10 show and I can ask the band to choose fewer songs where I sing lead. I will definitely ask my doctor when I see her Friday.
