Another piece of info - taking the ovaries- for what its worth

Had my pre-op chat with the surgeon today. I really like hiim and he seems to have tons of experience doing lap work on women - that's all he does. I have now had three opinions, the gyn, surgeon and my internist who all say take the uterus, tubes and ovaries and leave the cervix. I am 54 and that seems to be the over-riding factor for taking the ovaries. There appears to be some conflicting info of sorts about the potential positive value the ovaries serve post-menopause in heart and bone health, versus negative value in having continued exposure to estrogen that they produce after approx 50 years of age for women with breast cancer risk. This is consistant with a Dr. Oz show on breast cancer last week. I have extremely fibrocystic/dense breasts, bottle fed my kiddos, and have had prolonged exposure to estrogen as I am still menstruating at nearly 55 years of age. Based on all that, all three docs (all men, I might add) feel strongly that I should take the ovaries and lower my risk for future cancers. All that said, I am having a bit of anxiety now about hitting menopause all at once. I have been having hot flashes, night sweats, fuzzy brain, and vag dryness for years, so perhaps I am freaking out for no apparent reason. Now I am rambling on to boot......anyway for sisters in the "undecided" boat, there is one more story to confuse you!

Re: Another piece of info - taking the ovaries- for what its worth

I am sorry your are dealing with this - this is a tough decision to make. It always seems there is conflicting information out there. You have to make the decision that is right for you, weighing all of the pluses and minuses, and doing what works on balance.

Good luck with this.

I am 41 and going to OR in less than 2 weeks. Mt doc said, "they haven't worked well in 20 years. Don't do them any favors. Evict the ovaries." Funny and true. They have 13 days to pack their bags.
