Really getting nervous! HELP!

Hi! I'm scheduled for a Laproscopic Hysterectomy on Dec. 7th. My dr said they will leave my cervix. I'm starting to get really super scared! Please someone tell me this won't be that bad. I could certainly use some encouragement and support! 😥

Re: Really getting nervous! HELP!

Ankegram, it's natural to be scared when facing any kind of surgical procedure. Fear of the unknown is a factor too. Having been there I can assure you it's nothing you can't handle. Just follow instructions; don't be shy about asking for help and information; and think about all of us who have been through it and are just fine.

I won't tell you it won't be uncomfortable for a little while, but nothing that a little meds can't alleviate. I was surprised at how quickly the pain faded away. After three weeks I have to keep reminding myself not to overdo it.

You can do this! If I could do it, anyone can.

Re: Really getting nervous! HELP!

Being nervous and scared about surgery is normal - especially THIS surgery. The doctors and nurses are well trained, and they will take very good care of you. They will get you through the surgery.

This is MAJOR SURGERY, though, and my understanding is that the only thing more major is open heart surgery. I won't lie to you - the recovery time from this surgery can take a while, but it varies from woman to woman, surgery to surgery, procedure to procedure. Extreme fatigue is quite common, however. You will need time to heal - you need to listen to your body and rest, rest, rest. Become the during recovery.

Re: Really getting nervous! HELP!

I had a full lap hyst + ovaries this past Thursday. I'm VERY tired but I got through it just fine and I know that you will, too!

Such a big process.
Actually, a journey.

I had my surgery almost 3 weeks ago.

It is scary.

The surgery happens and you are completely unaware that they are doing anything to you. (quite the blessing)
Very different than when you go to the gyn and they do the exam or procedure and you are awake and uncomfortable.

Be Blessed, my sister.
Everything will be okay.

Re: Really getting nervous! HELP!

You sound like me one week ago. I am one week today post op and I feel great!

Even though they gave me anti nausea meds i still felt (but never got) sick. I swear they gave me morphine in the recovery room and that's why I felt so bad. The nausea lasted 6 hours but after that I seemed to feel better by the hour.

Within 8 hours after surgery I was going to the bathroom by mysel. Throughout the night I would go to the bathroom every two hours and each time it became easier and easier.

Within 3 nights I was able to sleep on my side.

I'm sure you've read this before but I can't stress enough get some stool softeners and prune juice and start using them your first day home. Oh and get gasx.

Just remember no matter how good you feel stay off your feet as much as possible. You need time to heal.

I was scared crazy too. It's a big decision and the fear of the actual surgery itself. After living with great pain for 5 years and now to feel so good I am kicking mysel for not doing this sooner!

Re: Really getting nervous! HELP!

My surgery was this past Monday, Last week, I tried to keep busy (getting house clean, getting christmas ready, preparing to leave work for 7 weeks) which kept my mind from the nervousness. My last surgery was tonsils when i was 5, over 44 years ago so surgery is definitely new territory for me!

By 2 days before my eventually SAH BSO, i think i was mentally ready to get this thing over with. Call a friend and just get and go somewhere - mall, grocery store...

Fear can be overcome, it really is a relief to get to the post op side and now can focus on recovery.

Hang in there, it will be better.

Re: Really getting nervous! HELP!

Hang in there sister. My fear was calmed by reading post op reports on this site which are honest and helpful, and generally better than I expected. My surgery was last Tuesday, uterus, ovaries, and tubes. I feel pretty darn good today and so glad to be on the other side. Hospital time was awesome, very well cared for there and my body seems to improve in big ways every 8 hours.
I am off narcotics and managing nicely with ibuprofen only and already sleeping on my side again and up and about doing small things around the house.

You will do great!

Re: Really getting nervous! HELP!

I have my surgery on Dec. 7 th too. We can be surgery buddies!!! I am getting laparoscopy via the di Vinci method...sounds like some kind of art work??

I am nervous too but trying not to think about it, I have been dealing with pain, bleeding for far too long. I am ready for it to be over. I am keeping my ovaries but everything else goes.

I will be thinking of you as the days pass by. Good Luck. Hopefully we can chat again.
