Should I keep my cervix or not!?

Well, I went to hospital yesterday for my pre-op. The nurse and I were talking and while going over what was going to be done, she said, "a total hysterectomy" So I asked her if that meant the dr was leaving my cervix. She acted suprised that I asked that and said most woman wouldnt even know to ask that. I told her I've been doing my homework. lol. She said I needed to ask the dr that it was up to me. Then she said that it helps hold the bladder up as you get older and considering that I'm only 31 it may not matter. So I just wanted some input on this. Thanks

Re: Should I keep my cervix or not!?

A total hysterectomy by definition includes removal of the cervix, which is part of the uterus and not a separate organ.

What is the reason for your hysterectomy? That will be a big factor in whether or not you remove your cervix. I would have a discussion with your DR about it now - don't wait until the day of surgery when you're anxious and in a hurry to try to talk this out with him/her.

Re: Should I keep my cervix or not!?

If you have time go to your family Dr and have a heart to heart with them. My reg gyn said to keep it. The specialist that is doing the surgery said to remove it because it can cause problems in the future. So my family Dr. told me not to keep it. It can cause the problems in the future and if it were his wife he would remove it. My mom had cervical cancer so I am choosing to have it removed. Sometimes if you can get an third idea from someone that knows you it can help you feel more at ease with your decision...Good luck you are having surgery the sameday as I am....

Re: Should I keep my cervix or not!?

I agree to have a heart to heart with your OBGYN. Mine asked me if I wanted to keep it, to which I replied why would I? His response was that some women feel the need to keep it. But... from a surgeons perspective, it is easier to remove during the hyster, and not to have to go back in years from now in order to remove it due to other issues: cancer, etc. Mainly because other organs (intestines, bladder) may and probably will grow around the cervix making the future surgery if needed a nightmare for him. More risks I think in keeping it. My opinion of course!!! Good luck!

Re: Should I keep my cervix or not!?

I've been wondering about this myself. I am scheduled for my pre-op on January 4th, and I'm trying to do as much "homework" as I can too. I know my MIL had her hysterectomy 30 years ago. She just recently had to have surgery to put in a sling for her bladder? Is there any evidence that keeping the cervix will stop that from happening? If you have no history of cervical cancer in your family, and you are having the hysterectomy for non-cancer related issues, what are the odds that they would have to remove your cervix later? I'm leaning towards keeping it, but I want to be completely open minded.
