Low Iron holding up surgery! Grr

In August my iron levels were 7.7. After 4 months of taking the supplements, and gettin the Lupron shots the levels are at 7.9. My dr wants them up to about a 9, and postpone the Dec 7 surgery 2 months!! Things have already been arranged at work, a temp brought in, short term disability arranged, etc etc..
Dont know what to do...

Re: Low Iron holding up surgery! Grr

Are you talking about your hemoglobin levels or your iron levels?

My hemoglobin levels were down to 4.5 at one point. I had to have blood transfusions to increase my levels. Maybe that is a possibility for you?

I would ask my doctor about different treatments. If it took you 4 months to increase .2 units, how much longer will it realistically take you to increase to 9?

My doctor also mentioned iron transfusions (I think they were called). She said that you got them through an IV (I think). I don't remember all the details because I didn't have to have them, but maybe your doctor would know about them.

I totally understand your frustration at getting everything set up and then possibly postponing surgery. I would have been stressed out, too! Good luck to you!!

Re: Low Iron holding up surgery! Grr

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. After getting work, etc. arranged and now having to postpone is very frustrating.

I don't know what to suggest, but I am sure your doc is worried about doing such major surgery on you with low iron levels. Is he or she prescribing anything else for you to do?

Re: Low Iron holding up surgery! Grr

I take 325mg twice a day, still lower levels. I wonder why we can't just take more iron supplements? One month of Luperon didn't help either. It seems in some cases you just can't get the good numbers till you remove the problem. I have appx. 3 weeks to go before surgery and I'm praying that the iron levels won't hold things up either. My regular doc said that if the iron level was too low transfusion would be done. I hope they don't put you off too long-Hang in there!

Re: Low Iron holding up surgery! Grr

Thanks everyone! I am still waiting to hear back from the doctor and I am thinking it wont be til Monday now!! My darling hubbie and a couple of friends even offered to donate blood for a transfusion, lol. Its just all so nerve wracking when you get your head all wrapped around the idea of the surgery, time off, recovery, etc, and 2 weeks before they say....ummm, sorry...Just have to keep extra busy this weekend! hummmm isnt wine good for the blood? lol Happy Thanksgiving all!

Re: Low Iron holding up surgery! Grr

New Update...surgery canceled till?? They did more in-depth Iron testing and all those numbers (serium iron?? and another she mentioned) were waaaayyy to low so now I have to go to a Blood Specialist for more poking and proding to see why these numbers are sooo low and not coming up. Still getting the Lupron shots-#4 next week. The nurse said she would reschedule surgery for two months from now & I refused! Told her nothing gets scheduled untill all the numbers are where they should be cos I am not going thru this again! So until next wed I am just floating along being tired, sore and bloated! YUCK. I think I felt better before I started this roller coaster ride!

Re: Low Iron holding up surgery! Grr

Glenda, I had an iron problem, too and the chelated iron pills (prescribed) didn't put a dent in the low levels. For some reason, my body would not absorb it.

A friend of mine recommended Floradix, a liquid iron with b complex vitamins sold at the vitamin shop. I wasn't sold on the idea so did not run right and buy any. My friend bought me a bottle for my birthday (she knows me well and knows I probably wouldn't have done it on my own) so having it in hand, I tried it. Within days I began to feel better. So much better, in fact, that when I ran out, I DID go buy more.

This stuff raised my iron from 8 to 14 in a little less than 2 months and my doctor was thrilled!

I know bodies are different and they have different reactions to different things but since it worked so well for me, I thought I'd at least mention it.

Warm regards,
beingmaxine
