Leaving the house for the first time

Hi all,
Was wondering when you left home for the first time after surgery and what type of outing/activities I can expect to be able to do?

Re: Leaving the house for the first time

Everyone heals at a different rate so you will have to trust your instincts. I tried to step out on the patio everyday just to take in some fresh air, but really just had my first outing 2 days ago (4 weeks post op). Take it easy, you only get one chance to heal!

Re: Leaving the house for the first time

As naturgurl said, everyone is different. I had an unanticipated visit with my GP two days post-op to deal with a reaction to the adhesive steri-strips, and then after that, my only 'outings' were onto my patio for air, until 3 weeks post-op. I was too tired to do anything until then. My first outing was a short walk and then I built up to walking 3-4 miles a day, not all at once, but in intervals. My rule of thumb was to stop and ask myself, 'Could I do this for another half hour?'; if my answer was yes, I'd stop at that point and then go rest.

Listen to your body, and don't worry if others are doing more than you are at any stage. Good luck to you!

Re: Leaving the house for the first time

The other sisters are right - everyone is different and heals at different rates. It is also surgery dependent, as well as if there are any complications.

The first few weeks after surgery, I could take brief walks but went on no real major outings. I did go to the grocery store, but took an electric cart and it was still very difficult even with DH's help.

You have to listen to your body, and it will tell you when you have to rest. Allow yourself time to heal, and at your own pace - you only get one chance to heal right.

Re: Leaving the house for the first time

Thanks everyone. I sometimes need reminders no to expect too much and pay attention to how I feel. I have a haircut scheduled for 4 days post op under the guise that it will make me feel better, but if Im not up to it....who cares, : )

Re: Leaving the house for the first time

Ridert I was not able to tolerate a hair cut until about 8 weeks post-op. The surgery can leave you feeling extremely fatigued. You will probably not feel like doing much for at least two to three weeks.

Re: Leaving the house for the first time

I am 5 days post DaVinci. I am walking distance (less than .25 mile) to a bookstore, and meandered out that way for about 1.5 hours. When I was ready to come home though, I was READY! Very fatigued. As for hair - no way could I have done a cut yesterday....but am hoping to go in for one this week. It may be too ambitious, and I'll cancel if I need to. Everyone is different, you may be up for BRIEF outings your first week; I wouldn't count on a haircut though. Unless you're going for a quick n easy buzz cut. Good luck!
