Surgery tomorrow - bowel prep question

Thoughts and prayers to all of us going in tomorrow!
I see a number of posts mentioning bowel prep - I was not told to do anything for bowel prep and was wondering if anyone else went in to surgery without having done any bowel prep.

I am getting very nervous for tomorrow. I am having an LAVH, bladder sling, rectal repair and all with an epidural (can't have general anaesthetic as I always react badly to it).

Thanks to everyone on this site for the wonderful support and advice.

Re: Surgery tomorrow - bowel prep question

Good Luck tomorrow! I am having TAH tomorrow too. I started my bowel prep at 2:00 and it's nasty stuff you have to drink and then you MUST be near a bathroom. Not fun! Be happy you don't have to do it. ) Hugs!!!

Re: Surgery tomorrow - bowel prep question

Not everyone has to do a bowel prep - it is doctor preference and procedure dependent. If your doctor did not request one, don't do one.

I have a bowl prep to do on 11/29. I have to take 6 pills of delcolax at once.

Re: Surgery tomorrow - bowel prep question

My bowel prep is on Wednesday, can't say I am looking forward to it but at least I can do it myself at home.

I have to do one too. It doesn't sounds like fun especially if it is like the prep for the colonscopy.

Re: Surgery tomorrow - bowel prep question

The nurse handed me the papers with all the bowel prep instructions, so when I asked the doctor about it, he said he didn't want me to follow what the paper said. Instead, he told me to do a soft diet yesterday and today, and to take a dose of milk of magnesia and a dulcolax mid afternoon. I did it yesterday, and boy howdy does it work! (Funny how the nurse says one thing, and the doctor says another, isn't it!? Best to check with your doctor, since the vary so widely!)

One more round this afternoon and its off to the castle at 5:00 am tomorrow! Good luck to you! See ya on "the other side!"
