Unexpected stay overnight after surgery?

I am scheduled on Dec. 7 for the deVinci method and I found out this morning i will have an overnight stay in the hospital.

The doc told me I was outpatient so i assumed i wouldn't be staying. So my concern is...is there anything special i should take with me for this short stay besides the basic hygiene stuff and comfy clothes to wear home? dummy me forgot to ask and you all are probably better at it anyway....

Re: Unexpected stay overnight after surgery?

There's a couple of Castle Lists floating around, but my recommends are cough drops or lozenges (your throat will be sore), Starbucks Via if you're a coffee drinker, and a pretty silk bathrobe to roam the halls in.

Re: Unexpected stay overnight after surgery?

I stayed overnight for 2 nights and per my pre-admission appt I was told to bring nothing except chapstick and thats ALL I brought. I didn't even bring a purse.

I wore to the hospital what I expected and wanted to wear home once released (sweatsuit)
The hospital provided EVERYTHING I needed (toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, deodorant, shampoo, soap) It was wonderful not having to pack a bag. I used the hospital gown as a gown and robe.

Re: Unexpected stay overnight after surgery?

I stayed one night and only brought hair and toothbrush, chapstick, moisturizer. I did not have a sore throat and when I walked around, they had me wear a second gown backwards to cover my backside. I was happy to wear their stuff and not soil mine, and I wore the same clothes home (sweat suit) that I wore there, since I only had them on for five minutes when I got there. I did put a pillow in my car for the ride home as was suggested by sisters here.

Re: Unexpected stay overnight after surgery?

Thank you all for your replies...I am gonna call the hospital and ask what they provide just in case they don't give you anything?? which i doubt.

Re: Unexpected stay overnight after surgery?

Lol you guys just saved me a lot of thinking and stress. Toothbrush and lipgloss I guess. Gotta love that soft lips cool Chapstick. I agree why ruin our stuff? I want my new pajamas to be enjoyed at home. I travel a lot for work and HATE packing so this is a relief.

Re: Unexpected stay overnight after surgery?

Here is another tip. They give you a plastic bag for your clothes. I took a backpack and only put my shoes in the plastic bag which then went in the backpack. This way my shoes (esp the bottoms) which I had worn on hospital floors (notorious for bad germs) did not touch my clean clothes or anything else. I used to work in health care and most nurses and docs I know will not wear their "work shoes' in their own homes - they stay in the garage. There is a lesson for you.

Re: Unexpected stay overnight after surgery?

They gave me a plastic bag for my clothes AND a second plastic bag for my shoes to go in before going in the big plastic bag. I stayed overnight and took very little. I was really glad for my iPhone and charger. It was a long quiet night and I couldn't sleep much. I didn't feel like reading but I had a few simple games that passed the time.

Everyone talks about the sore throat as if it's inevitable. I had a talk with the anesthesiologist before surgery because I'm a singer and didn't want anything to damage my throat. Because I'm healthy with strong lungs he agreed to use a smaller tube plus they used extra something to relax my larynx and extra care putting it in and out. Bottom line: no sore throat.
