try TVH and if doesn't work, do TAH?

My hysterectomy is scheduled for Dec 5, 2011. I saw my doctor yesterday and he agreed to try a TVH first at my request (he gives me a 20% chance that it will work because of large size of growths to get out - I have one fibroid that is 14cm x 9 cm x 7 cm and a second unidentifiable growth that is 6 cm wide) and if that doesn't work, he will move onto a TAH (what he had originally recommended).
Now I am wondering if this is a good idea. Could this result in a longer recovery period if he must move to a TAH (which is, according to him, an 80% chance)? The only reason I asked him is because it is a less invasive surgery and I read on this website to try for the least invasive surgery possible.
Any advice would be really appreciated.

Re: try TVH and if doesn't work, do TAH?

I had TAH with no other choice because of the size and multiple fibroids.

Yes, recovery is longer (externally) for TAH but internal recovery is still roughly the same time frame...........6-12 months for complete healing.

From what I understand, the less invasive procedures, you just actually feel better sooner. You aren't healed internally any sooner.

I can't tell you which way to lean on this. I will say, if I only had a 20% chance with TVH and possibly turning into TAH, I would do the TAH.

Have you ever watched a video on youtube of TVH? I've watched them all and I, personally, wouldn't want my innards & va jay jay turned inside out & pulled through my va jay jay but that is just me.

Think about it. They would try the TVH first, so that means trying to get it from "down there". Find out it ain't gonna happen, then have to poke everything back up in there, stitch up anything that is needed, then go and cut your abdomen. You will be sore in BOTH places instead of just one place like a normal TVH or TAH. Like I said, I didn't have TVH, so I really don't know how it feels. I just find TVH creepy.

That's just my own opinion.

Personally I find all surgery creepy! I had a TVH 4.5 months ago and am still plenty sore so it doesn't necessarily cut down on your recovery time. We all heal differently and at our pace. My doctor also told me he would do a TAH if he couldn't do the hyster vaginally.

I had a TAH & am 8 weeks post-op. Wouldn't have it any other way. Best of luck to you. :-)
