Home care

I'm just wondering what items I should have on hand at home after surgery? I didn't give any thought on what to bring to the hospital till I found this fantastic site? I would like to go and do my own shopping before surgery, instead of depending on my husband to find the right things.

Re: Home care

I bought Stool softeners and laxatives (which I have used), Gas X(which I have not used), good lotion (I like Aveno), panty liners (I used the first two days, but haven't needed since), cotton balls and hydrogen peroxide, a thermometer, plenty of juice (cranberry has been my favorite), fiber one bars, easy open cans of soup, fruits, jello, pudding, yogurt (Activia), etc. Your first week will revolve around all the unpleasant bodily functions, pee, poop and fart. Anything that helps those functions along, will be good to have.

Re: Home care

If you are going to be on your own for any length of time, organise your bedroom so you have anything you need within reach before you go into hospital. One really useful thing that I DIDN'T have was a reacher-grabber (see HysterSisters store). When you can't bend down you seem to drop anything important!!!

Arawyn's shopping list is spot on. I found cranberry juice and stool softeners (natural as well as powders - eg raisins, prunes) especially important. I needed pads for three weeks after my TAH.

Re: Home care

Thank you for all the suggestions. My kids will still be off school for winter break and my mother in law will be here to help me when my husband is at work. Dr is using divinci and hoping the recovery process is quick. I'm 13 weeks post- op from foot surgery and just started getting into a normal routine.. Thanks again.
