Vivelle-Dot vs. Generic Estradiol Patches

Hey Sisters

My surgery date is 12/14/11 and my ovaries will be removed. My insurance company will only pay for the generic estradiol patches and I read somewhere else that the generic patch is much bigger than the vivelle-dot and does not stick as well. I received a sample vivelle-dot patch and I like how small it is. Years ago I used the birth control patch and it was about 5 times bigger than the vivelle-dot sample I received and it irritated my skin really bad. Are there any sisters who have used both patches and who can give some information about the pros/cons of both?

I am not having any trouble with the estradiol patch sticking, but I do get irritation from the adhesive part and have to move it every 3 days to a different spot, or my skin gets really irritated. I haven't used the vivelle dot.

Re: Vivelle-Dot vs. Generic Estradiol Patches

I have used Vivelle-dot for almost nine years. Before that I tried Climara and one of the generics - made by Mylan (there are others but they're similar). The generic patch did not stick well at all and was huge and thick. Climara was better but still would not stay stuck for the entire week. That's why my DR told me to stay with the Vivelle-dot. In almost nine years I've only ever had ONE patch come off prematurely. It does take a bit of work to get the sticky residue off once you remove a patch, but you learn to deal with that and the tradeoff is it really works.

s,
-Linda

I am 6 wks. post-op, and have used both types. Only used a generic because even though my doc specifically requested "no substitutes" (for Vivelle) on the RX, the pharmacy filled it with a generic estradiol per insurance co. requirement. It was large, and the first one gave me a minor rash, but after that it didn't seem like a big deal. Until my doc found out what had happened at my 2 wk. checkup and wrote me another RX, and had her office call the ins. co. They decided to cover it...my doc can be very persuasive, lol, and believes Vivelle is a better quality than the generic. It is nice that it's so small. But if my ins. co. hadn't covered it, I most likely would not be able to afford it and would make due with the generic. Hope that helps...

Re: Vivelle-Dot vs. Generic Estradiol Patches

Thank you all so much, this has helped me tremendously. Sounds like the generic patch is similar to the birth control patch I've used before (which I didn't like). My insurance company is only going to cover the generic patch, so I wonder if my doctor can call & persuade them to pay for vivelle-dot.

Re: Vivelle-Dot vs. Generic Estradiol Patches

Yes, the generic patch I tried was about the size of a baseball and thicker. I hated it. It made me itch and wouldn't stay stuck.

The climara I liked and still do, but it would't stay stuck either and didn't last the whole week. To me, for patches, nothing sticks better than Vivelle. But I did think climara had a more even distribution ratio for me or something.
