Not really sure what to expect

I have been battling fibroids for years but was told that they were small and shouldn't be causing any problems. Ultrasounds showed only a small one about 3.5cm. I had a novasure ablation in March 2011 and now 8 months later after contiunual bleeding and agonising pain for most of the time my gyny decided to check me out for one last time becuase I insisted and wouldn't go away. well when he agreed that I had tried everything known to medical science to control my bleeding he finally agreed that I needed a hysterectomy. When he checked me he found a fibroid the size of a 16 week pregnancy so I now have to have a total abdominal hysterectomy and removal of both tubes & ovaries. At 52 I am Ok with this but I am a bit concerned about instant menopause and also what he will find once he is in there. I have had constant stabbing pain in differing intensity in my right side and around to my back since the Novasure (not so sure) so I am hoping that it will resolve once I have the op. I would appreciate any advice.

Re: Not really sure what to expect

I wish we all had a crystal ball to let us know what the surgical menopause dump will be like. No one knows until they go through it. Some women can be just fine without the hormones and some need them.

I am 46 and had a TAH BSO (total abdominal hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries and tubes). I had planned to do it without hormones. That is not how it turned out for me. I had to go on ERT because my symptoms were to bothersome and difficult to deal with.

My advice is to talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of going on ERT or HRT. You can also wait and see how your body reacts. The good news is is that you probably have time to wait and see what happens.

Regarding pain, I do not know. If your doc does not know, please tell him.

Good luck.

Re: Not really sure what to expect

Hi I'm 54 and had a TAH BSO in Sept. I too would not stop bleeding for 2 months. I ended up being anemic and feeling horrible. Like marestail said everyone is different. I did not have any menopausal symptoms until 8 weeks post-op. The hot flashes and insomnia started then. Now a few weeks later I'm sleeping better but still dealing with the flashes. I am not on any HRT and feel I really don't need it. All in all I feel so much better then I did before surgery. Wishing you the best!

Re: Not really sure what to expect

Thanks for your thoughts I think I will need lots of 'talking to' over the next few months while I wait for it to be done. I forgot to mention in my first post that my endometrium measured 11mm which I found curious after having had an ablation. I have been experiencing hot flashes and insomnia for quite some years so I don''t think that will woryy me too much.
