With large incision - anyone got over swelly belly?

Just wondering and worrying that the swelly belly might be a permanent fixture if you have had abdominal surgery and have a large vertical or horizontal incision.

OK, I am "only" 3 1/2 months post-op., but I have this obsessive fear that it might be less likely to go away if you have had your abdomen ripped open and everything shoved around in there!

I have to hear from someone that got rid of their swelly belly eventually and had this invasive surgery!

Sorry to hear swelly belly is still around.

I can only tell you that for my less invasive surgery it went away around 4 months.

Hopefully someone who is further along in recovery will stop by.

Re: With large incision - anyone got over swelly belly?

I'm 6 months out from my TAH and my swelly belly comes and goes. I can fit into my "skinny jeans" again but they're not very comfortable for very long. Lots of physical activity makes the swelling worse. I have some support undies that help with the swelling but I hate wearing them. lol

It does get better, it just takes a while.

Re: With large incision - anyone got over swelly belly?

I never had much swelling to begin with but I would say by about 5 or 6 months, I had none at all. It was really hard to tell if I had swelling because my tummy was significantly smaller once they took my football size uterus out. However, the roll above my incision took about 8 months to flatten for the most part.

I'm 6 months out and had the lateral incision and for the most part, the only time I have the swelling is towards the end of the week. And it's not so bad if I wear the support undergarments.

I also am using vitamin e on my incision... it keeps the swelling from irritating the scar.

Thanks for replies!

I won't give up hope yet!

Just wish I could get back into jeans, but they are too tight and the zip is right over my vertical incision!

Re: With large incision - anyone got over swelly belly?

I had a TAH with a large vertical incision almost 11 months ago. My "swelly belly" is gone for good. In the early months following my surgery, I wore a girdle which helped to support my abdominal area. As soon as I was able to exercise, I focused mostly on my abdominal area, doing crunches and yoga. Exercise and a proper diet helped me significantly in keeping the swelly belly at bay. My abdomen is now flat and the incision is a thin, straight line.

I wish you all the best. There is hope for getting over your swelly belly.

Re: With large incision - anyone got over swelly belly?

Oh, Astrana - I hug you from afar!

I don't mind waiting 11 months..... really. Just as long as it goes.

I am by no means overweight, and I was quite fit for an old gal of 62, so I'm used to getting into slim fitting clothes. I am getting my fitness back (started on the uphill walking I did pre-op.) but haven't quite had the courage to do abdominal exercises.
Trouble is, anything mildly energetic makes me swell all the more. At least I am fairly flat in the morning, so I know it isn't fat.
Thanks for your encouragement - I need it!
