Pain meds post surgery

I don't want to sound like a baby or anything, but I'm afraid of not having strong enough pain meds when I get home. I had my ablation by the same Doctor & he sent me home with a very low dose pain med & I ended up in the ER that night for a shot & another stronger pain med. What do they send you home with? This is what I'm most scared about, being home in pain & not wanting to leave to go to the ER. Sounds crazy huh?

Re: Pain meds post surgery

Meds vary from DR to DR as well as from patient to patient. Your DR will make the judgment with input from the nurses who are treating you in the hospital. Some women have very little pain from the surgery; some have quite a bit. For me it was like bad cramps the first day or two, then much less after that. I did not require prescription pain meds for very long.

Talk with your DR prior to surgery about your concern. They do like to try to help you 'stay ahead of the pain' because it's easier to maintain pain relief than to establish it once the pain is out of control.

Good luck with your surgery!

Re: Pain meds post surgery

I had hystre, BSO and many repairs. My main pain was the right side incision. In the hospital you'll probably get the morphine pump and I just maxed it out just to stay ahead of the pain and just dozed and felt really nice! Got up and stood just a couple hours after getting back to the room, walked alot the next am.

I am a pain weenie, too! Just thinking about it makes you stressed! Just have whomever is taking care of you keep track and take everything as often as you can to stay ahead like surfer says. I had percocet and 600 mg ibuprophen when I got home. We even set an alarm to take it during the night so I wouldn't wake up the next morning in bad shape.

Good luck! All will go fine!

Thank you all!! I guess the stress of the holiday's & the up coming surgery right after is getting to me! Plus we are a military family & have decided to DRIVE home to Ohio from Florda for the 1st time in 6yrs!! The last time we were "home" for Christmas my 7yr old was in a pack & play and on bottles!I'm sure he'll make sure I'm comfortable. Merry Christmas!

Re: Pain meds post surgery

I have stressed about pain managment as well. I had a surgeon that removed a 6mm kidney stone and discontinued my pain meds post op. It was a nightmare. I have been told my Dr. would never dream of doing anything like that...Im just nervous. I plan to discuss pain managment at my pre op appointment so I can know what to expect. Good luck!

Re: Pain meds post surgery

I lay here just hours after my surgery. No pain pump. Oral pain pills that make me itch. So I get benydrl.

Pain pillow, cocoa butter stick, and my hand lotion were essential. ( bath and body eucalyptus spearmint stress relief)

Re: Pain meds post surgery

since I've had alot of medical issues and surgeries I know what pain meds work best for me so I told my doc what I wanted for after and he said no problem. Sometimes you just need to voice your wants/needs and they will take notice and do whats needed.
