Re: Bowel Prep??

It is best since there is risk of perferating the bowel during surgery so if you are "cleaned out" then if the doc needs to do any bowel repairs there won't be a problem with stool leaking into your abdomen and causing infection or septsis. Trust me, do the prep because the other is not fun. I have crohn's disease and my bowel perferated on it's own and I became septic and had massive infection and had to have 12 inches of intestine removed. Poopie in the bellie is not a good combo. Just to be on the safe side.

Re: Bowel Prep??

I have done a pill version and honestly its not much better. Taking 24 pills in a 2 hour period with tons of water is very difficult to get down at the end. Tasts better but hard to swallow. Pun intended

Re: Bowel Prep??

Did your doctor give you bowel prep instructions? If not call your doctors office and ask them. I think every doctor has different rules. I always had to do the bp on my surgeries, but I've heard some of the girls on here didn't. Good luck to you!!

Re: Bowel Prep??

I too hate the BP but I agree, it's better to be safe than sorry. My dr. changed their BP directions a couple years ago. The new way isn't terrible (I have had 5 prior laparoscopies for endo). It requires 8.3 oz of miralax mixed with 64 oz of water or other clear liquid. Last time, I mixed with the grape gatorade. Like Susan said, get it really cold - it really helps. Also, gatorade (if your Dr. approves) helps to prevent dehydration. I also recommend using a straw, that way if you use ice, it doesn't splash into your face. Good luck!

Re: Bowel Prep??

You should only do a bowel prep if you doctor instructs you to. If you do one without your doctor's instructions, you run the risk of showing up the day of surgery dehydrated and having your surgery postponed/canceled. Your doctor will tell you what is expected and if not, just ask him/her.

Re: Bowel Prep??

My dr told me to drink it I was freaked out about it but 4 hours later I sat in the bathroom for 25 minutes & it was all over with- not too bad. Also- After surgery it will take you several days to poop so you do not want any extra bowel in there! Drink it!

Re: Bowel Prep??

I would have loved to take the magnesium sulfate, I have had it before and it wasn't bad. But for the Hysterectomy I had to do Go Lightly and 12 antibiotic pills with only a liquid diet the 24 hours before surgery. Needless to say I threw up twice and had to call Dr at home on Sunday afternoon so he could call something in to pharmacy so I could keep it down. I asked him about magnesium sulfate on the phone and he said no. You will feel much better after surgery if your bowels are clean before surgery.
Best of luck ,
