Re: surgery planned for monday (i'm a little nervous)

I keep reading people bringing robes. I will only be in the hospital overnight. The only robes I own are long and awkward. That just seems like something I won't need to use...even when doing short walks around the ward isnt what they give you at the hospital sufficient? Don't want to bring it if I don't need it! Thank for any advice!

Re: surgery planned for monday (i'm a little nervous)

I brought a robe because I didn't feel comfortable walking the busy hallway just in the hospital gown, and it was quit cold to me as well. If you feel you won't need it, then just pack what you'll be needing. Everyone packs different. Good luck to you!!

Re: surgery planned for monday (i'm a little nervous)

I don't spend much time in hospitals so have no idea how busy the halls will be or how much walking I will need to do. In my brain I am the only one there . Ha! Thanks for the input. The things you start to think about the day before you go in!

Re: surgery planned for monday (i'm a little nervous)

When I had my TAH back in 07 I was totally oblivious on what to take as well. Thank goodness for this site. It was such a big help to me. I know it's hard to even process anything when you have surgery right upon you. I've had my share already, and now I'm going to be scheduling yet another, and I'm already getting a bit nervous. No matter how many you have the butterflies always come back. At least for me that is...If you've already done your pre surgery shopping, just ask the nurse for another gown but it on so the back on the gown can tie in front, and use it for a robe. Just a thought.

Re: surgery planned for monday (i'm a little nervous)

Good luck to all of you that have the surgery on Monday.
About the stuff you need to take with you,....don't worry so much about it if you have someone coming to visit you all the time. The only things that I got with me were the clothes I got on me, a robe, some magazines, a book, and my tooth brush and tooth paste. When you go in, they dress you up in the gown that is tight at the back, and it is advised to walk as soon as you feel strong enough to do it, starting with 10 minutes at a time , and then longer...and more often. This was my first surgery ever, plus I am not very young either and I was scared too but people around me encouraged me and supported me a lot....Ask for their help! Some people are not so intuitive to realize what your mind is going through, so don't be ashamed to ask for any kind of support you need. At this time in your life you are entitled to this favor....

Re: surgery planned for monday (i'm a little nervous)

ms.sugar and spice pretty much nails it on what to expect recovery is not a picnic u will need someone to stay with u at home at least for the 1st day or 2 you're at home.it seems you'll want the very thing that is waaaaaaaaay across the room.i would suggest u also unplug your phone because u are gonna be in pain and a lot of well-wishers always want to call u and people mean well, but it made me very nervous and i just wanted to be left alone and not tell the 100th person the same thing.i personally just wanted it done and i was ready but there was a moment before surgery where i wanted to make a run for it.i wasnt pleased with my hospital care,i guess because i've did cna work and i really felt real neglected in hospital.i knew for a fact i should have gotten better care.GETTING IN ANDOUT OF BED IS A TRUE OBSTACLE.USE PILLOW ON BELLY FOR COUGHIN AND LAUGHING.shave your legs tonight and take a luxurious bath u wont get one for 6weeks

Re: surgery planned for monday (i'm a little nervous)

I had an abdominal surgery not laparoscopy, and in my case they say you need to walk as soon as you can to prevent blood cloths and stimulate normal digestion. You will be dressed in just a thin gown that is tied in a couple of places. On the hallways is cold - the robe was useful for me but i was hospitalized for 3 days. You might go home same or next day I suppose...So you might not need it. Good luck!

They just give you a gown with short sleeves and very thin material....You cannot walk on the hallway in that. It's cold on the hallways...Just my opinion. :P
