First meals after surgery

My surgery is Dec. 14. I'm trying to plan ahead with meals for myself (already made and froze meals for my family). What kinds of foods do I need to have around for myself those first few days at home? Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: First meals after surgery

Hi Im 12 days post op and the weekend before my surgery I was a cooking fool, it all depends on what you and your family like,I made homemade mac and cheese, shepards pie, meatloaf,i color coded ,and labeled the food, the shelves of the freezer and left lists, all of that wasnt really needed, but I did it anyway, I have cooked a little bit but its nice to have stuff to just thaw and heat..
the first week to 10 days didnt have much of an appitite,I had puddings, yogurt, toast , tea, stuff that wasnt to heavy.its tough couse your whole innards have been thrown around , plus like most of us your plumbing might take a little to get back to normal..
there is a thread on here of a whole bunch of freeze and heat recipes, just hunt and you will find it, and good luck with your surgery, you will come out on the other side just fine

Re: First meals after surgery

I made and froze lasagna, shepards pie, chix casserole with mushroom soup on top. ( forgot the name of it). I found a list on this site of food to pre make before my surgery. I'll try and find it and post it for ya. Good luck.

Re: First meals after surgery

I made chicken breast schnitzels and cooked some shrimp and put them in the freezer...It was enough until after I got home (3 days) Don't freak out about will be able to move around to give instructions. Standing up or laying in bed was not my problem. The only problem is that you cannot bend or use your belly muscles because of course it hurts... You will need help nearby when you put on your socks, when you lay down in bed or stand up from the horizontal position for a few days. So don't worry about the food so much. I made food, baked bread with the machine and even baked a cake on day 6...

Re: First meals after surgery

I kept things light and simple. Soups, broth, jello, mashed potatoes, rice. My tummy just wasn't ready for heavy meals. Lasagne and shepherd's pie would've killed my tummy early on post op.

Re: First meals after surgery

I am day 11 and eating normal from day 2. However, I avoid bread and pasta and I drink a lot of liquids. The food I cooked preop was for my family to have until I recover :P.

Re: First meals after surgery

I'm 3 days post op and eating only soft foods until I manage to pull of the first poop. Just sayin'. I don't want to complicate the already complicated process.

Re: First meals after surgery

The hospital served me full meals from the start. Needless to say, I didn't eat it all. I ate fairly light the first few days, but was able to eat what my husband & daughter cooked.

My best recommendation - avoid carbonated beverages. Adding CO2 to your body - in your case, more CO2 - is a recipe for painful swelly belly.

Re: First meals after surgery

for the first few days all I ate was canned pears and cottage cheese.
Then I started on simple foods. Mashed potatoes, soup ect...
I kept it light to give time for my tummy to ease back into foods...
Good Luck..

Re: First meals after surgery

I found oatmeal really helped the first few days at home. Also, even though I don't like them very much, stewed prunes helped get the "system" back to normal. Since I lived alone, I had plenty of frozen prepared meals in my freezer. I had toast and tea in the morning with my breakfast.

Let us know how you are doing once you are comfortable back to posting. One of the great things about this site is that someone is always online no matter what time of day. When I couldn't sleep, I would sign on and there would always be someone here.

Blessings to you and your family this holiday season. Before you know it, you will feel so much better. Remember to take care of yourself. You only get one chance to heal. Listen to your doctor's orders for post-op care.
