Trying to stay healthy during cold & flu season!

Well, 3 more sleeps...

And I'm finding I'm having these 'freak out' episodes, all of which seem to be about other issues, but I think is really about the surgery.

Psychologically, though, I'm ready to go. Physically, arrangements are made. Everyone knows, even people I didn't really want to know (But I had to tell one person in town to prevent wild rumors from floating around--we've had a lot of cancer deaths around here, didn't want that sort of rumor going around the community!)

What I'm most afraid of at this point is getting a cold and having to have the surgery cancelled. I normally take vitamin C and just bump up the dose if I feel a cold coming on, but I was told 'no supplements for a week pre-op'. So I'm paranoid at the first sniffle and eating grapefruits and oranges and adding lemon juice to my drinking water.

My husband actually is fighting off a cold at this point.

Would a mildly runny nose make them cancel?

Re: Trying to stay healthy during cold & flu season!

I'm worried about the same thing. My hubby is home with pneumonia, and my son woke up this morning with a cold. And my surgery was just bumped up by three weeks, so I go in next week now instead of next month. No hugs or kisses from anyone now, and lots of lysol spray!

Re: Trying to stay healthy during cold & flu season!

Its funny that we are all from such varied backgrounds, are having surgery for so many different reasons, are from different parts of the world yet we all share the same fears!

A few weeks ago there was a wicked cold going around work, I had a day or two where I wasn't feeling my best and I said, ok if I am gonna get sick it has to be now, or wait until the new year! My son is battling it bad right now too and I feel horrible that I don't want him to snuggle up to me too close, just a few more days!!

Re: Trying to stay healthy during cold & flu season!

I too have been very worried about getting sick. I am a teacher so I am around germs all day long. I asked the hospital about getting sick during my pre-op and they told me not to worry about a sniffle and they are only concerned if the drainage is green because that means that an infection is present. Hopefully none of us get sick and we all make it safely to the other side without any problems!

Re: Trying to stay healthy during cold & flu season!

My surgery is Monday 19th and my oldest has strep throat and bronchitis. I keep telling her to move away from me when she is coughing. I am terrified I am going to catch what she has and they wont be able to do my surgery! I am eating extra citrus as well. Good luck ladies and stay healthy!

Oh my goodness, Aimeshair. Strep is nasty.

Yes, this is prime season for colds and flu's, so let's hope we all manage to avoid it and get our surgeries over with.

Re: Trying to stay healthy during cold & flu season!

Every little symptom has be jumpy. My nose tends to be a bit runny in the mornings, I have a bit of a sore throat right now. Getting nervous about this, and still continuing to drink plenty of fluids and ingesting the citrus. They had trouble intubating me for my hysteroscopy, so I'm hoping I don't have any issues with my throat day after tomorrow that are going to make them send me home.

It will be nice when it's Dec 17th and these jitters are behind me.

Same here. I have practically locked myself in my office and tell people to e-mail or call me. I can't afford to let a cold get me now.
