cathater...curious

For those that have had a Da Vinci....how long did they leave the cathater in for? I am hoping not long after the surgery.

Re: cathater...curious

I had da vinci yesterday. As soon as I got woke up enough to be aware of it, I asked them to pull it out. I was insistent that I wanted it out so I could go on my own. I felt that getting up and walking around some would be good for me too. I came home yesterday evening. If it is uncomfortable and you want it out, just tell them.

Re: cathater...curious

I had da Vinci on Nov 22nd and dont remember them taking it out. Maybe they did it before i was with it enough to remember. I did end up having trouble peeing enough the rest of that day (retaining up to 900ml) and had to spend the night. They would cath me after each time I peed to see how much the bladder was retaining. When I got to under 150ml, I got to stop cathing after I peed. I went home with a little flexible catheter and had to measure at home too. It really wasnt as bad as I would have guessed, once I got used to it. So much nicer to learn to do it yourself than have a nurse do it for you! It only took about 2 days for my bladder to get back to normal. The doctor said this happens to about 20% of her patients.

Re: cathater...curious

I had DaVinci on 11/11/11 - and also wanted the cath out quickly. I too retained urine - and had to have it reinserted - They left it in all night - then the next morning took it out. I was still retaining- although they used an ultrasound machine to measure the retained urine (so no cath). Each time I went to the bathroom they measured output and retained. Each time I retained a little less. So, when I reached a particular point - something like less than 175 ml retention(can't remember) they let me go home. So I should have gotten out Saturday morning - but didn't get to go home until Saturday evening.

It wasn't too bad. No problems at home either.

Re: cathater...curious

I had davinci Nov 21. When I came back to my room my cath was pinching me. I asked to have it removed and they did. But I also could not pee for 4 or 5 hours. They told me if I didn't pee by a certain time they would have to re cath me. I finally went with a half hour to spare :-)

Re: cathater...curious

I had a da Vinci on 10/20. I had the cath in until the wee hours. I did not have any real sleep in the hospital, so I suppose it would have stayed until the morning if I had slept. I had absolutely no discomfort from the cath. In fact, I'm glad it was there for the first few hours. I had some horrendous gas pains and sitting up was unpleasant, so it was nice to have a " lazy" way out of peeing : ) I peed just fine after it was out although I was extremely dehydrated-it's a peculiarity for me to dehydrate easily. Good luck with your surgery and recovery. See you in post op!
