Vasal Vagal reaction during surgery ~ have to reschedule

My laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy was had just started and my heart stopped and I coded in the ER and had to be revived. I left the hospital with a heartbeat - but also with my uterus and it's same problems. We have to reschedule surgery for February, and it will now be a full abdominal incision as we aren't going to attempt the laparoscopic incisions again. Has anyone else had this reaction?

Re: Vasal Vagal reaction during surgery ~ have to reschedule

Hi I'm sorry this happened to you. Vasovagal response during surgery is very unusual; it's more common when the patient is awake and having a local/regional anesthetic. Did the anesthesiologist talk with you afterwards about what happened, and offer any explanation? What type of meds and anesthesia had you had when it happened?

This is definitely something you will want to talk with the anesthesiologist who's going to do your hysterectomy about before you go under again. It may be that they triggered what is called the "Bezold-Jarisch reflex"; using different medications and procedures next time might be able to avoid that in the future.

It doesn't sound related to the type of incisions to me, but maybe to the position they have you in? I believe in lap surgeries you are tilted down more steeply than in abdominal ones, and that could have been a factor.

I hope you have much better luck with your next hospital visit and I'm sorry you have to wait.

s,
-Linda
