dry mouth

Shilo,I have an extremely dry mouth also and to tell you the truth I cheated. I'm not recommending it because it is against doc's orders but I'm just saying I did it. I had a cup of water in the car with me on the way to the hospital and several times I put enough on my tongue just to wet it, like natural salvia would. It made me feel so much better. Also, the anestesiologist had an oral anti-nausea med for me to take when I got there, with , to my surprise, a cup of water!
I second the sisters who said to let the anestisiologist and doc know all of this ahead of time, and to write on your chart about your dry mouth. Also make sure the recovery room nurses know and that they have the doc's WRITTEN permission to give you ice chips in recovery room. My first surgery my tongue got stuck in my mouth it was so dry, so be sure they all know to do this. It will help you feel SO much better!
If you have someone coming to the hospital with you, ask them to keep your water cup filled because the nurses don't have enough time to get to it as often as you might need it. I had them fill 2 big 16 oz cups at a time. I get SO dry and thirsty!!
Good luck!

nausea meds

Shilo - Check with your doc about this, but mine allowed me to "rinse my mouth out and spit" during the pre-op fast. Thank goodness, too! It was in the 80s and dry as a bone here (a Santa Anna, for you So Cal folks) - my arrival time was 2 p.m., and I spent the morning hauling manure and rototilling my garden. On top of that, my nose is always stuffy, so I had (with my doctor's OK) take Sudafed. Boy was I dry! The rinsing helped, at least. After my hyst I was **so** thirsty! Even with the IV - not the same as a tall, cool drink, even though you are hydrated. My first big walk was to the Snapple machine at the far end of the hall.
