I'm 13 days post op, and started spotting last night. My gas and cramping are unbelievable!!! When I go to the bathroom, I am in tears it hurts so much. I am taking gas x, and a stool softener with a laxative in it. HELP!!

Re: 13 days post op

Hi freeat40
I'm sorry you're having all this pain. I know how miserable the gas can make you. Have you talked to your dr about your situation? I'm just wondering if it was your dr who recommended the stool softener with a laxative. I'm just guessing, but it concerns me some that the laxative could be making your gas worse. I used a stool softener and highly recommend you do until you are more healed, but you might be better off to not have the laxative considering all the gas pain you have.

How are you doing with drinking your water? I don't know what you have tried, but there are lots of ways to deal with constipation short of a laxative. You need to make sure you're drinking a lot of water. I find that warm water is sometimes helpful, and make sure you are eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Are you doing any walking? I also found that being too inactive caused some problems for me in that area.

I know at this stage of your recovery you're not wanting to over do but walking is very good for you and will help with the constipation. Just listen to your body and when you're tired, rest. I also had some bleeding at about this stage in my recovery. My dr told me it was common at about two weeks because this is when your sutures begin to dissolve and it often causes some bleeding or spotting.

One other idea for you is to try some warmth on your tummy to help relieve the gas pains. I used a warmed rice bag, but a heating pad would work. It was a huge comfort to me for cramping and a lot of that is due to that awful gas.

I noticed your surgery type isn't on your profile. If you could add it, it would help us help you better. I hope you get to feeling better soon. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Re: 13 days post op

This is my 14th day from surgery. I also had a LAVH (total). I would like to share how I treat constipation since I am always constipated even before my surgery. What works for me are the following: drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water daily, I drink water first before my coffee, I stopped taking laxatives and stool softerners sicne they irritated my stomach more, I take prune juice with a little milk instead as a substitute (which is very effective) if I can't I eat prunes )preserved fruit daily, most of call I eat more food with fiber. Plus I wenton a soft diet first to be gentle on my sotmach. Doing this really helped me lot and I was never constipated since day 1 post-surgery. Hope this will help.

Re: 13 days post op

I know just how you feel and I'm so sorry for you! I am 14 days out and thought my digestive system would never return to normal. It is VERY slowly improving, but not without help still. I was in so much pain that I would almost throw up and pass out.

I've been able to keep things under control by taking my Gas-X (and in between as needed!), as well as 2 Colace stool softeners with every meal. No laxatives because they are harsh! My doctor prescribed this even in the hospital. I drink lots of water; between 30-60 oz. daily. I stay away from known foods that irritate my system (dairy and wheat) and no gas producing veggies (beans, broccoli, onion, cauliflower, etc.) and no hard-to-digest red meat.

I've also started chewing Papaya & Pineapple enzymes (Trader Joes)... they seem to cut down on gas. And, I've just started eating a few prunes, but watch it because they may cause gas! I've started pro-biotics in pill form (they need to be refrigerated!).

I hope this helps you. Love and healing to you!!

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Please hang in there!

It is so good to know that I'm not alone, and that it's all normal. Thank you both for the wonderful advice and understanding. XOXOXO!!!
