Is there always swelly belly?

Have seen a lot of posts about swelly belly following the hysterectomy. I am having mine done vaginally. Will this still be an issue? I asked my doc about what I should bring to wear home and he said my normal clothes would be fine. Now I am not so sure. What do you all think?

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

Personally for me (I had a LAVH) I had almost no swelling. I wore my same jeans and underwear I wore to the hospital. Ok that sounds like I wore the same underwear.....I meant the same size underwear :-)
I had the davinci 7 weeks later for staging and did have a swollen belly. My jeans would not zip the whole way. Today 3 weeks later my stomach is back to where it was before surgery.
Everyone is different though.
Good luck!

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

I had TLH and could wear my jeans (but didn't because of the incisions)... once in a while had swelly belly... I would say plan to wear lounge or sweat pants home from the castle though - just to be extra-comfy.

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

If nothing else, the incisions will be tender. I wore a loose dress which was good since I swelled. My incisions are in such a place that wearing my usual bikini undies is working fine.

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

I had a TVH. I am 5 months post op and big swelly belly. I have lost 10 pounds since surgery but tummy is still huge. I can only wear stretchy waist pants, 2 sizes bigger than usual. Tummy is flat in the morning and looks 5 months pregnant by dinner. I'm not enjoying it.

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

I had a TAH. Still have 5 months pregnant swelly belly by the end of the day, even though I start out with a flattish abdomen. So, I know it's not fat.

It may possibly be a little less than it was........... or maybe that's wishful thinking!

Hope you don't have this, but it IS common, and if often lasts a fair while, whatever the medicos may say.

It doesn't seem to have much to do with the type of surgery.

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

I am one week post-op (TLH/LSO) and my swelly belly is almost gone...more like a bit of bloat at this point; however, I was very swelly right after surgery! No way would I have wore my jeans home.

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

I had such minimal swelling after surgery that I wasn't even sure if I had swelling and I wore my normal clothes home. In fact, my tummy was smaller than before surgery because of the size of my uterus. Now, a year later, I do recognize that I did have a tiny bit of swelling.

I have a theory about swelly belly and of course it is totally unproven. Think about other injuries or surgeries that you might have had such as having your wisdom teeth removed and how much you swelled then. If you had a lot of swelling, swelly belly might be in your future. If not, then you might have a minor issue. I had no swelling when I had my wisdom teeth removed and as I said before, I had very little swelling.

I hope this helps you make a decision on what to wear after the surgery.

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

I am almost 4 weeks out from surgery and never had any swelling in my belly. I had the daVinci surgery so maybe that was a factor.

Re: Is there always swelly belly?

I had a bit of a swollen belly in hospital but once home my tummy looks smaller than before. I did have an enlarged uterus so that may account for looking smaller.

I will also add that I am resting quite a bit and I think that might make a difference too.
