Blood transfusions????

When my dr was telling me about the things that could happen during surgery, she mentioned a transfusion is occasionally needed. Before I could say anything she said "don't even ask me about banking your own blood. I don't allow it. I want my patients tanks to be full when I perform surgery." So every dr is different about a lot of things!

Blood transfusions????

I had a tah/bso about three weeks ago and was having problems post op. My heart rate was way too high, I was having problems breathing and was put on oxygen. I was so weak that I couldn't lift my head up. They did blood work and found out that my hemoglobin level was under 3 (I believe the normal range for women is at least 11) No one knew why it had dropped so low but they suspected internal bleeding. Luckily that was not the case but we never did discover what happened. I was told that I needed a transfusion and had one despite my fears of blood contamination problems. I had no advance warning of the hysterectomy and there was no time for family members to donate blood. I am still pretty anemic so I can imagine the condition that I would be in without the transfusion. If you have time you should donate your own blood just in case because you would have one less thing to worry about later. I am thankful that I had the transfusion and also thankful that the blood screening process has improved so greatly over the last few years. As with everything else that has happened I am trying to keep the attitude that what happens does so for a reason and that I can't worry too much about what is already behind me. Good luck and take care.
