5 days after surgery and the GAS PAINS and back pains are going to be the death of me

O.K. so My name is Danni, I am new here, I came home 2 days ago after a TAH/BSO and feel o.k, got up pretty fast and started my slow walk, thought I was Superwoman, then when the pain pill wore off, thought I was going to die, everything hurt so much. My back hurts alot, the gas pains are worse than contractions and I still have not gone to #2. , just wanted to see if anyone feels like I do at this stage ?

The gas pains liked to have killed me also. GasX is my new best friend. Took 3 doeses throughout the day on Wednesday, and felt like a new woman Thursday. Also, ClearLax, which is Walmarts version of MiraLax, helped with a bowel movement. I hope you get some relief because the gas got up under my rib cage and I felt like I couldn't get my breath. It was the worst. Good luck.

If the gas pains get up into your shoulder put your rear end on a couple of pillows and lie down like that for about 15 minutes. It shifts the gas to less painful spots and was almost an instant relief.

I take gasx too. I have used miralax on and off to make sure I'm regular. Stool softeners too. Pooping helps with the gas too so increasing fiber might help, although it can also cause more gas.

Re: 5 days after surgery and the GAS PAINS and back pains are going to be the death o

I was in a lot of pain from gas 2 days out. GasX was a great help, walking loops in the house was very helpful. I used dulcolax to help with the bm. The gas and pain stopped after my gut started working again. Now the pain from my SAH is minimal. I am using 600mg of ibuprophen about 3x per day. Will be less soon I am sure. Walking also helped the back pain. I think the back pain, for me, was more related to the goofy positions while lying down to keep the pressure off my incision and stomach.

Re: 5 days after surgery and the GAS PAINS and back pains are going to be the death o

Hi. I had my TAH this past Wednesday. The gas and back muscle pain are brutal. Each day things are getting a little better, and I do mean little. I take what I can get though. I have a couple of suggestions for you that work well for the gas. first, if you can, lay on your left side without being in too much pain, that will help shift the gas towards your colon so you can pass it easier. It may be painful while moving through your abdomen though. second, when I go to th toilet I relax as much as possible and take really deep breaths and then release them slowly until I just don't have any more air to breathe out. That helps me. Lastly, I try to walk a little bit making sure I stand as straight and relaxed as possible. I can only walk a very short distance before feting fatigued and shaky though. I hope you recovery speedily and that some of the thing I've mentioned will be of help to you.

Take care and big hugs!

Re: 5 days after surgery and the GAS PAINS and back pains are going to be the death o

I kept an ice pack on my tummy for the first week. That and tylenol did wonders for the pain of my tah. I also walked around the house a lot - only a little at a time but several timees a day because I learned from other surgeries that it was the best way to relieve gas. As far as the back pain, I had more pain in my hips and it HURT. I just think it is the position that they put you in during surgery - I had a lot of bruising on my hips. I laid with a lot of pillows for comfort those first 2 weeks.
It takes time.....Make sure you give yourself plenty of time and rest to recover.

Re: 5 days after surgery and the GAS PAINS and back pains are going to be the death o

I also found the gas pains made it hard to take a deep breath as the pain radiated up into my ribs. One thing I found helpful was to lie flat on my back, pull my knees to my chest and cross my ankles (knees apart). I lie like that for as long as I can. I can take full breaths without pain. Only problem is it doesn't help move the gas around. Just gets rid of the pain temporarily. Gasex has been my best friend also. I do laps around the house too. By far the gas pain is worse than the surgery pain!

Re: 5 days after surgery and the GAS PAINS and back pains are going to be the death o

I had TERRIBLE pain from gas after my TAH/BSO. The pain was worse than from the surgical pain (and that was pretty rough too!)
I think I had gas problems for about 2-3 weeks. Can't remember how long, but it seemed an eternity.
Partly my fault for eating a very high fibre diet to help keep things moving!
I didn't have a BM for 5 days and it was wicked!!! I swore off the opiates at once because constipation was worse than rthe pain. I got by with ibuprofen and/or paracetemol for as long as I needed pain relief.

OK - here's what helped my gas pains (I don't know if we even have Gas-X in this country!)
Walking is one good thing, and mooching around generally.

Gas relieving exercises they showed me in hospital:

1) Lie down flat. Pull one hip up as if shortening that leg, then do the other and alternate several times. Called "Hip-hitching"!

2) Lie flat. Pull knees up. Rock them from side to side.

3) Lie flat. GENTLY massage your abdomen in a clockwise direction.
This worked for me better than anything.

Good luck, drink lots of water, put flaxseed/linseeds on your cereal, eat 2 kiwifruit a day (they are fantastic for constipation. Every Kiwi/New Zealander knows this! )
