Embarrassing enema question

My surgery is tomorrow morning at 11 AM. For my bowel prep, I had to eat soft foods yesterday, and clear liquids today. Tonight I have to do an enema. I think I'm more freaked out about that than the surgery! I was reading the instructions on the box, and it says you do not need to use the whole bottle. There is so much liquid in that bottle - how do I know how much to use? I'm trying so hard not to think about it too much, but I just can't imagine putting something in the exit!!

Re: Embarrassing enema question

It's really NOT a lot of liquid in the bottle... but really, you don't need to use it all unless the doctor told you otherwise. It's usually better to do about half, hold it as long as possible and then go... wait a little while and do the other half. It's also better if you warm it slightly (not too much for obvious reasons but a bit warmer than room temp makes it more comfy)

It feels a little weird, but really it's not too bad. It will likely make you cramp like you would if you had diarrhea coming on... but it's supposed to. Take deep breaths and wait... then wait a few more minutes if you can... then go.

Re: Embarrassing enema question

I just used the whole bottle. Really, it's no big deal. I put a throw rug down on the floor in the bathroom and did it right there so I wouldn't have far to go when the urge hit - which happened pretty quickly. Lubricate the tip with a little KY to make it go in easier. It sounds much more awful than it actually is.

-Linda
