Newbie: 6 days post op, LAVH, kept both ovaries

Hello to all my new "sisters!" I'm a 40yo who had a LAVH, because of fibroids & heavy/painful cycles, on 12/21/2011. Thankfully, the doc was able to leave both ovaries. I haven't had any signs of infection or complication. However, I was surprised at how moody and hormonal I feel. Everything I read about the surgery said that leaving the ovaries helps delay menopause-type symptoms. But I've realized that I have been thrown into a depression that I didn't see coming. (I do have a history of bipolar disorder, on medication for it.) While I personally knew I was not going to have any more children for some time, I do feel a sense of loss. I'm not sure why! This is all very confusing to me. The irregular sleep cycle is not helping the depression. I figured I'd look for some type of support group to see if anyone else is experiencing or has experienced any of the things I am this soon after surgery. I look forward to "meeting" you & hearing your stories.

Hello , I am just over 3 weeks post LAVH with BSO. I have read on here that it can take some time for your ovaries to function normally. I understand you can ask your doc for temporary HRT if you are feeling bad. Read some of the other threads to see others experiences but it sounds like what you are experiencing is not unusual.

Re: Newbie: 6 days post op, LAVH, kept both ovaries

I believe those of us who suffer from depression, bipolar, etc feel the effects of the shocked ovaries quite intensely. I have both ovaries & am 5 weeks post op. Emotions are much better than they were at week 3. I spent a lot of time in bed with Mr Heating Pad & my iPhone with Facebook. Relaxing & quiet. Things will get better. Please talk to your doctor if you think you need meds adjusted for the short term affects.
