birth control?

I had a hysterectomy when I was 21 due to severe endometriosis and still to this day, 4 yrs later I'm struggling with pain and menopausal symptoms. I think I've tried just about everything and then my doctor puts me on the nuveo ring. she said it's supposed to increase my nonexistent labido and vaginal dryness. I just started it this evening so I'm not even sure if it will help, but I'm curious if your docs ever suggested you use birth control to help?

Re: birth control?

Yes, doctors can suggest various types birth control medications for women who have had a hysterectomy. Have you also had an oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries)? It can be prescribed in place of HRT or to help regulate the ovaries if one has not had an oophorectomy.

The hormones in birth control can be in higher doses than typical HRT which can be appropriate for younger women who may require more hormones that a woman closer to menopause. Also, there can be a combination of a type of estrogen and progesterone which can be helpful for ladies with endometriosis.

Specifically, the Nuvaring contains a progestin and an estradiol. The progestin could help keep any remaining endometriosis at bay while the estradiol addresses menopause symptoms.

If you have questions, talk to your doctor and/or pharmacist.
