When will I poop again? When will I poop again?

When will I poop again?

I had my hyst on the 27th and the doctor started Mr on a stool softened while I was in the hospital. I've been passing lots of gas but no bowel movements yet. How long did it take some of you to get your bowels back to normal? Is there anything else I should be doing/taking and is there any cause for concern?

Re: When will I poop again?

I had my surgery on Dec 9 and it took me about 4 days to have my first BM. I was getting concerned about it and ask my doctor, she told me the longest you could go without a BM was 7 days and then she would have to intervene. I ended up having a BM that day. Thank goodness!

Re: When will I poop again?

I used ClearLax, Walmart's version of MiraLax. I usually go every day. And I had a BM 2 days after surgery. I hope you get relief. No BM for days suck.

They didn't release me from the hospital until I had my first BM. They gave me plum jam as laxative and I got dry plums from the store before the surgery after I read some of our sisters' advice here on this site. Now I'm in my 5th week and I still use 3-4 plums in the morning on empty stomach and a big cup of water or tea. My BM is perfect, twice a day, on time and no pain...Just give it a try...

Re: When will I poop again?

it may take a few days to have a bm depends on how well your bowel was prep'd before surgery meaning was it completely emptied and what your diet is now if it is liquids you may not have anything to poop yet be patient it will come just make sure you are using your stool softeners no need for straining at all...

Re: When will I poop again?

I have sluggish digestion... can easily go 3 days with no bm even under normal conditions, so I was very nervous about potential for constipation after surgery.

In hospital, my first two days were liquid only. I had lots of gas (ouch!!!!) but didn't expect any bm. On the third day, they brought horrible inedible things such as cold cheeseburgers... I picked at whatever looked fiberous on the plates and concentrated on chunky applesauce brought by DH on his visits.

At home on day 4, I had stocked up with more applesauce, frozen steamer packs of rice and veggies, cans of chick peas, figs, bran muffins... anything that had a hearty fiber content on the package.

That worked well for the first week, but now either I'm unconsciously slacking off or my body is used to the high-fiber diet, because my digestion has bogged down again.

Not constipated, but lots of painful gas and not much else happening there. I don't THINK I'm constipated, but am considering an investment in stool softeners if I don't have a significant bm soon.

I am trying not to get discouraged, and walking short distances as often as possible. Anyone out there feel they've reached a point when this became a non-issue - how long did it take?

Re: When will I poop again?

I hate to be a downer but I am more than a year post-op and am still experiencing issues. Before my fibroid issues, I too was one that went easily 3 days with no bm and that was my normal routine. The fibroids actually helped me go daily. I got used to that so now, I feel uncomfortable and know I have to go but can't. My doctor told me to drink 8 glasses (64oz) of water daily to help with the constipation. If I slack off on the water, I struggle. I am getting lots of fiber so that part is fine, I just need to drink all the water which, for someone who normally doesn't drink much, is hard.

By the way, stool softeners only work if you also drink lots of water. The water is what keeps things soft and if you take stool softeners without the water, it can make things worse.

I hope this helps a bit.

Re: When will I poop again?

I used stool softeners and milk of magnesia for first week and worked like a charm. MOM worked really well for me. At 4 weeks post op I will drink a little bit if I am feeling like I can't go. I need to go everyday to feel comfortable.

Don't worry yourself...I know you are anxious but I'm sure you will be going by the end of the week. It took me 3 days. Just relax yourself....good thing you are passing gas.

Re: When will I poop again?

4 days, no pre-surgery bowel prep. I took 2 stool softeners and a cap of Miralax daily for the first 2 weeks; I now take 1 stool softener and a half cap of Miralax with no problems. I think it took me 4 days due to fear! I told my doctor I was using Miralax, as I feel it works better for me; she said it was a perfect choice and continue...even if every other day just to stay regular with the healing process.
