Re: undecided about having my sweetie at hospital

This weekend my sweetie was here visiting, and we had a good talk about my upcoming surgery; he is going to come down here the day before (since I have to be in hospital at 5:30 in the morning!) and will be there the whole day. There were some tears on my part, b'cause he was so kind about the whole thing. I just never had someone to count on like that before...

Amanda - my heart goes out to you that your hospital is being so unkind... If you have him there, who knows, they might not chase him out! Even if they do, if he is only as far away as the cafe, it will be quicker for him to visit once that is allowed. Do you know what time your surgery will be, and when you will likely be back in a hospital room afterwards? When I had the D&C and biopsy operation in November, (done under general anasethesia) I first woke up in the "recovery room", where no visitors are allowed anyway; once I was stable I was moved to another room, without all the other patients, and then, eventually my sister was able to see me. I am hoping that it will work in a similar way this time, for me, and that for you somehow, your boyfriend will be able to be there for you.

Hello

we have now arrange for my mum and Dad to bring my boyfriend to come in at 2pm which is visiting times to see me the hospital will not budge on having anyone there before the op or after until the visiting times Im going to have my op around 11am so hopefully I will be back on the ward and waiting for him to arrive. I don't like this rule but there's nothing we can do about, all I keep thinking is when I get home he will be there 24/7 and can hold my hand all day if I wanted him to

Good Luck Ladies with your up and coming operations hope everything goes well and everyone is on the road to recovery very soon xxxx

Keep smiling

Amanda

Re: undecided about having my sweetie at hospital

I think it is a personal decision, for sure, and that it depends on your relationship with your "sweetie."

On the practical side of things, I know it helped me for my husband to be there. I was aware of having just had surgery and felt some pain, but couldn't communicate very well. I was anxious to get some meds in me so that I could go to sleep. I vaguely remember that my husband acted as a sort of go-between for me with my nursing staff. They were very attentive and helpful, but my husband was the one who went into the hallway to find a nurse if they didn't respond quickly and was also the one to manage when and how many visitors (family and friends) came to see me at one time. He was more than emotional support. He was a personal assistant of sorts. Of course, I did the same for him when he had back surgeryk, so we had been down this road before.

Hope this helps! I, too, struggled with the lack of control aspect of having surgery. I finally decided that having the surgery was taking control of the situation, not losing control. Big hugs!

Re: undecided about having my sweetie at hospital

I was so glad that my husband was with me. He was able to help me up to use the restroom vs. calling the nurse each time. He helped me to walk the halls beginning the evening after surgery. Just having him with me was comforting.
