Why does it hurt so bad to poop?! (kids mentioned)

Sorry but I need to understand the physics of it I guess. I'm 10 days post op. I take stool softeners twice a day & have been eating at least 15 prunes a day, still passing hard stools only every other day if I'm lucky. Why is this? I assumed it would be like after childbirth, the first stool passes & you're back to normal. I'm almost in tears on the toilet every time. I'm just wondering why I guess. Aside from the pooping difficulties, I've had more pain the last 2 days than at any point up to now. I'm thinking it's a sign I've done way too much too soon. I go for my 2 wk check up on Thursday & was planning to go back to work Friday... I'm thinking that might not happen based on how I feel right now. I just really need to make some money... I know y'all probably can relate to that. But I'm a single mom so it's all on me; if there's no money coming in then bills don't get paid, food's not on the table.

Re: Why does it hurt so bad to poop?! (kids mentioned)

Are you drinking enough water? The fiber from the stool softeners and prunes only work if they have water available to keep things soft. You should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water (64oz) daily. I know that even more than a year post-op, if I don't drink the water, I get into trouble.

As to going back to work, only you can decide that but personally, I know I would not have been able to even though I had a super recovery. Is there any way that you can call your church and ask for help?

I hope this helps.

Also, if you are still on pain meds that will make BMs more difficult.

Water fibre and healthy eating is my advice.

Hope you feel better soon.

Water water water.

I have been a single mom and I know where you are coming from. But what you need to remember is that an extra couple weeks of healing time now will probably make a huge difference in the long run. If you push yourself too early you could have complications that put you back in the hospital or could just delay full healing so that you are still not working at full efficiency.

Even if you normally don't have to do this a trip to a food pantry, application for utility assistance, or other things like this may be in order. I think most people who donate to these places would be thrilled if they knew they were helping someone who normally helps themselves rather than lifelong moochers. I know that when I had money I donated so I could help people who were temporarily ill, injured, or had a temporary catastrophe.

If you are a member of a church or other group you should let them know you need help. One group I was in used to do things like run errands, make meals, clean etc to help out members who had something like surgery lay them up.

It is particularly important that you heal well because you are the one who needs to take care of your children. I used to not take care of myself because I felt I had to take care of everyone else. That has always led to disaster and over the years I have learned to be good to me.

Thank you, Whirlygig, Loubda, & Danni3ll3 for your support.

I've been pushing water a lot since the post. It hasn't helped with the constipation. I've been extremely nauseous off & on, at times very debilitating, since the surgery. I had the Dr call in Zofran (it's what they gave me in the hospital that worked), but that hasn't seemed to help since. I'm calling the Dr in the morning. I can't make it waiting till my 2wk post-op on Thurs. In fact I felt so weak & nauseous last night that I almost went to the ER but the thought of sitting around waiting made me decide otherwise.

I'm doubting I'll be able to go back to work anytime soon. But I feel like I should be careful now to prevent further problems so whatever the Dr orders is what I'll do.

Thanks again for the support, it's much needed and well appreciated.

Re: Why does it hurt so bad to poop?! (kids mentioned)

Oh how well I remember the bowel movement problems. It took me until day 16 to be able to poop and I was taking Miralax, drinking water. When I did finally go and for awhile after that I thought I would pass out from the pain of going. It does take time for all that to work out after the surgery but in the end it all works out.
As far as going back to work, for me there would have been NO WAY I could have done it. I did have a complicated surgery and have had lots of problems from the surgery. But I would think that even if you have a great recovery it will take longer than 2 weeks to be able to go back to work. That is of course something that only you and your Dr. can determine.
Good Luck.
