Made the decision - how long off work?

I called the doctor, to talk about scheduling my hysterectomy. I haven't heard back yet. Anyway, I was wondering, how much time did you have to take off work?

Re: Made the decision

Thanks.....that doesn't seem so bad. I read something that said 6 weeks! I don't want to be off that long.

Re: Made the decision

It depends on the type of surgery you are having. An abdominal hysterectomy will be a longer recovery...6/8 weeks normally. With that being said everyine recovers differently. I was told 2 weeks but I wasnt ready. The extra week helped. Some go back much sooner. Its important to listen to your body and not too push it. If you are ready, great but if you aren't dont be afraid to speak up. You only get this one chance to heal. Good luck.

Re: Made the decision - how long off work?

From all my research, i read what Tracy said. I am planning two weeks off following my LAVH. I am hoping that is enough. Your Dr will discuss options of surgery types. Some from what i have read are excludedfrom some kinds based on their individual circumstances. Keep coming back here, this site has been such a help to me as i prepare for the big day. Take a deep breath and know your Dr will take the route for you!

Re: Made the decision - how long off work?

Hi Ginny,

Everyone is so different, so it's hard to know how long you'll need. And the type of job you do may affect how much time you'll need too.

For what it's worth, here's my experience: All I wanted to do was sleep and nap and sleep some more for the first two-three weeks post-op, and I had no complications from surgery.

I have a high-energy full-time job which involves lots of moving and being on my feet all day, with no time for breaks. I went back at 4.5 weeks post-op, but was mentally ready at 3, felt ready at 4 (with my doctor's okay), and gave myself a few more days to keep resting up. My biggest hurdle was fatigue. Once I was back at work, it was easy to overdo things, as I couldn't take breaks to nap when I felt like it. I think a sit-down job is actually harder with pressure on the abdomen area (regardless of surgery type), so keep that in mind too.

Good luck to you!

Re: Made the decision - how long off work?

Please be sure to discuss surgery method and your job & duties when deciding how much recovery time you will need. I went back after 2 weeks and wished I had waited another week due to the sheer exhaustion.

Re: Made the decision - how long off work?

I took 6 weeks off work, and honestly -- I could have used 8.

Although I had "just" a desk job, it was a very mentally taxing one running a community bank.

Each night, as I battled swelly belly, I was "in my couch" by 6:30 or 7:00. But because I was "supposed to" be healed, I soldiered on.

I also felt lingering pain. But because I was "supposed to" be healed, I soldiered on and didn't go to the doctor.

One day, at about 7 months post-op, I decided maybe I wasn't just a slow healer. I went to the doctor where the discovery of a large hematoma was made. Cause of fatigue and pain - BINGO!

I'm not going to say that I caused the hematoma by going back to work too early -- because I know that's not the case. The problem was that I didn't listen to my body and I pushed on, even though I didn't feel well.

My point is that, no matter what the books say or your fellow (((sisters))) say, take off the amount of time you need. Don't go back to work when you're not well, no matter what the book says. If you're tired, rest. And go to the doctor when things don't feel right.
