3 weeks post op. Need advice ... Please

I'm still having troubles going to the restroom(bm). I am taking stool softener & metamucal (sp). I strained about a week out of surgery & popped two Glue tape stitches. Now I have 2 huge holes. Doctor taped them back up but I feel alot of discomfort. If I sit or stand longer than 30 mins I cry for about 2 hours. Doc said there was some swelling on the side I busted open. Put me on antibiotics & more pain pills.
Here's the thing I'm in alot of pain Doc is not very nice nor does it seem like he really cares. He won't take the time to explain anything to me. He's always rushed. I can't find a new Doc seeing as how I'm on medicaid & it was a rare find to find a gyn who would take me & take care of the issues I had. I just need some advice as to how to not strain for a bm & some kinda pain relief. Ibuprofen & such doesn't touch the pain. Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Sarah

Have you tried drinking a lot of prune juice?? That may help with the BM problem. Make sure you are drinking tons of water. That can cause a problem if you are slightly dehydrated. The pain meds can cause constipation also. Can you ask if you can use Miralax?? That might help more. If you are in pain and the meds aren't helping,go to the er. I know you have Medicaid but the hospitals I know will treat you. It sounds like you are having problems and the doc isn't listening. There are a lot of different things you can use for constipation including fiber chews, milk of mag-doesn't do a thing for me- but ask your doctor what to use. If you are hurting, it will make healing slower. Sending tons of support and hugs.

In the begining I was very constipated also. Before I left the hospital I was given an suppository to get things moving and it helped. I also started eating bran cereal every morning and it has helped tremendously. Drink lots of water and avoid alot of dairy products as they are very constipating. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon.

I can't even say bran cereal without its effects kicking in that and Milk of Magnesia if it's particularly stubborn. Walk, water, stool softeners am and pm, water, fiber-bran prunes, veggies, water, coffee, oh, and water.

I am so sorry about the problems with your doctor.

I would highly recommend prune juice. I am still having bowel issues and the horrible pain. So my regimen now in the mornings is drink (more like chug) 8 ounces of prune juice and then brew coffee, and then eat a piece of toast with first cup of coffee. Works within an hour and a half. I had constipation issues in the few months before surgery because I was on iron, which causes constipation, and Miralax worked fine then, but it hasn't worked since surgery. Only the prune juice does the trick.

Magnesium will help with that, you can get pill form in with vitamins at walmart or wherever you get your medicine

I bet the prune juice will help you! Also, I lightly brew a cup of "Smooth Move" tea (available in the tea section of the store and/or natural tea sections) and that gets things going. I don't steep it the full time it says, because I don't want full laxative effects. It worked for me (I did this before surgery too when I felt constipated because I refuse to use laxatives). Sometimes I will have a quick brew cup a few days in a row to get things cleaned out...love it.

Miralax has been a god send - I read somewhere here to mix prune juice with apple juice and drink it warm .... Good luck!
