Re: hysterectomy, mastectomy and cirrhosis

Oh my - That's a lot!

I wasn't in the same boat as you. Definitely have a long conversation with your surgeon and see if you can find our who will be your anesthesiologist. You definitely need to have a longer conversation with him/her that the few minutes just before surgery that I had.

You might ask about a spinal block. It's an injection of a local anesthesia into the base of your spine, similar to an epidural, but without the catheter. The spinal block reduces the amount of general anesthesia you will need, it lasts for hours and eases the transition from IV pain meds to oral. I highly recommend it.

Best of luck to you!

Re: hysterectomy, mastectomy and cirrhosis

Sweetie, I am so sorry you are dealing with all of that. That is a lot on you plate. I also had a fast growing mass on my ovary that turned out to be benign. I did not know until my surgery. I hope yours is also benign.

Definitely talk to you surgeon and anesthesiologist regarding your risk factors. They need to know what is going on with you.

If it is an option for you, I would also recommend the epidural with the general anesthetic. I had both and would do it that way again in a heart beat.
