Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

Any one else taking Lupron? just curious about side effects...so many intense hot flashes, tired all the time. I have an injection each month, trying to shrink large fibroids before surgery.

Gems
Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I have been taking Lupron shots for two months now (I will NOT do a 3 month at once) to shrink large fibroids. I'm hoping for DaVinci.

I'm always tired it seems but I think that's more my schedule than the drug. I have hot flashes but not too horrible and a random migraine from time to time. I am having some issues with insomnia which is unfortunate as I am UGLY to be around without a decent night's sleep. All in all I'd say my side effects are mild. Here's hoping it works!!!

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

I got my first Lupron shot yesterday. I hope the side effects aren't horrible as I'm already uncomfortable enough as it is. We'll see, but thankfully I only have to have the one injection because my surgery is in 27 days

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

Here's some more info...the nurse at my OB's office said that I would have another ultrasound at 3 months to see if the fibroids shrunk. If not at all, she said the Lupron wouldn't work & I'd be done with it. If it did shrink, I might do more Lupron or go in for surgery depending.

I don't know about you all but I am so tired of thinking about all this. I want it all over and done with!!!

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

This is one of the things I want to discuss on Monday with the new OBGYN I scheduled an appointment with for a second opinion on my hysterectomy. The first Dr didn't take much time to explane Luprons use or side effects, other than to say if my family loved me now they sure wouldn't once I started on Lupron.

I am so happy to find other sisters who are currently using it. I remember reading some where that some women have had to try the drug for a bit longer to get their fibroids to shrink. Has any one here found that to be true for them?

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

I had LAVH after 2 1/2 months of Lupron injections. I had a HUGE fibroid (larger than a cantaloupe). My surgeon didn't know if the injections would shrink it enough to be able to do the LAVH but they did! My side effects were hot flashes and vaginal dryness. I'm actually still getting hot flashes 3 weeks after my surgery although I kept my ovaries which leaves me wondering if Lupron's side effects can last 1 1/2 months? I'm not sure about that. However, the pros definitely outweighed the cons for me because I really didn't want to have to do the TAH and the injections made it possible for the LAVH! I do recommend the Lupron injections.

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

Its great to hear from you tooEasy. Your reply gives me hope that the Lupron might be worth trying. My first Dr. ruled out any kind of procedure other than TAH because my Fibroids are quite large and my uterus has enlarged quite a bit, (about 4/5 month pregnancy size) I will be sure to discuss its use in more dept with my new OBGYN.

I have read here on this site that hot flashes after surgery even though you kept your ovaries is kind of common as your ovaries might be in temporary "shock" from the surgery it's self. I will keep my fingers crossed that they come out of it and cool off your hot flashes.

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

I am getting my 5th shot next week...I started them to stop my periods to build up my Iron as I discovered I am anemic, as well as shrink fibroids-the DR said my uterus is the size of a 6month old fetus! I had migraines after the first shot, they eased up after the 2nd. Also had & still having Hot Flashes (realtively mild), body aches and sleeplessness. Unfortunately my iron stll isnt up enough so I have one more injection to go then surgery will be set. It seems like the mores shots I get the less sympoms I get! Good luck to you (all)!!

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

Hi KaylaV! I assume you are experiencing heavy bleeding and/or major cramping due to your fibroid? Another great thing about Lupron is it stops your period so no more heavy bleeding/cramping! Also, my dr told me operating on a fibroid that large makes the surgery a lot riskier. The injections reduce the surgery risks.

Please definitely discuss it with your doctor because it helped me have a much better hysterectomy!
