To keep my cervix or not....

Hello Sisters, I'm brand new to this group. Thanks for being here. This is my dilemma du jour:

I'm scheduled for surgery on Wednesday January 2nd. I have rectal cancer and the surgery is primarily for that; I've also had a history of ovarian tumor (benign) and my mom died of ovarian cancer; so given that and the radiation effects I've had to my pelvic area, the consensus is to remove my uterus and remaining ovary at the time of the cancer surgery. I'm totally on board with that, but am wondering about having my cervix removed also. I've been researching this morning and the opinions seem split down the middle.

Any wisdom to share on the subject?

Thanks -- WindStar.

To keep my cervix or not....

Hi Windstar!

I am so sorry for what you are going through, and I am also very sorry that you lost your mom. I lost both my parents to cancer as well, and I understand how hard it is.

Well Windstar, I can only tell you if this were me and they were taking the uterus and remaining ovary, I would probably tell them to go ahead and take the cervix as well. I think if I didn't I would always worry and wonder if something may develop there down the road otherwise. This is truly my own opinion, and I know that lots of people say if the organs are healthy to keep them, and obviously they are giving you this choice so its really a personal decision I think, but personally, I would rather have them take it, to allieviate my fears I think.

I wish you all the best with your surgery, and please let us know how you are doing. I will keep you in my prayers for the very best results with no further treatment required.

Hugs
Maria

To keep my cervix or not....

Welcome to the site Windstar!
So glad that you found us and I hope that you will not only find information you are looking for here, but I am sure that you will meet a lot of very caring women!
I had my hyst for cervical cancer, so my cervix and uterus were removed. I have had no difference or change in orgasms and if anything, my sex life is better. If I were in your positions, considering everything that you are already going through, I would have the cervix removed also. Just the thought of IF you should have had it removed would probably make me very nervous. Knowing that I took out the main components for cancer to latch on would make me feel better. No matter what though, this decision has to be yours because it is final and it is your body. I have been with the board here for over 2 yrs and normally there is a 50% range of women who are for keeping the cervix, while the other 50% say that it makes no difference. I wish there was something more concrete that I could tell you to make your decision easier, but considering your past medical history...I think you have already made your decision.
