started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

I had LAVH on Dec. 15. It couldn't have gone better! Basically no pain and my only complaint is Hot Flashes. I bled for about two days and then stopped completely. Since I felt so great I decided to have sex exactly two weeks after surgery. Everything was fine. There was no pain or anything. Approx 2 days later I started spotting every time I urinated. Last night I started bleeding red blood like a heavy period for several hours before basically stopping about an hour ago. I know I was a fool for having sex so soon and I don't want to have to tell my doctor if it could be normal for me to bleed like that. I don't want to over-react since I've read that it's normal to bleed somewhat after the hysterectomy. As long as it goes back to just spotting it's totally normal, right?

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

You need to see your doctor. They tell you I wait the full six weeks or longer to have sex for a reason. Sex isn't that important to jeopardize your healing and be at risk for more surgeries and longer recovery time. I would be seen by the doctor to be on the safe side.

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

As you said, foolish. Embarrassing or not, you need to tell your doctor, and the sooner the better.

The heavy bleeding you experienced is not normal and there is risk of serious infection, especially if you have torn the vaginal cuff, which is highly likely since it has not had proper time to heal.

Vaginal cuff repair will restart your healing process and it will probably be another 6 weeks or more before the doctor releases you for sex. When they say 6 to 8 weeks, they mean it. You can take it easy and follow the instructions now, or do it later. Problem with later is that it also means longer.

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

Call your doctor. Today, not tomorrow, not in a couple of days. Today!

Two weeks post op is too early to have sex after a hysterectomy. You need go in and have him take a look and make sure you have not damaged anything.

When they tell you nothing inside for 6 to 8 weeks, they say it for a reason.

Bleeding after a hyst can be normal, and bleeding after sex the first time can be too, however, you really did have sex too early and need to call your doctors office. Be sure to check back in and let us know how you are. Hopefully you have not damaged any thing and will be fine.

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

Spotting is pretty normal but heavy bleeding is not. The risk of damage or infection is very high at 2 weeks. Please call your dr. right away and make sure you are ok.

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

@tooEasy, I am concerned for you. This is not normal to bleed that heavily. Have you been to your doctor yet? Please consider this an emergency even if the bleeding has stopped. I do not know what time it is there, but the ER is a definite option if it is after hours.

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

Thank you for your posts! I appreciate your feedback! I called my doctor but the nurse didn't really know what to do because the doctor is booked today. She's supposed to ask the doctor and call me back but she said to go to the ER if the bleeding resumes. However, I was reading some posts and several people said heavy bleeding is defined as going through a pad an hour. My bleeding was heavy but not quite that heavy. If I have an infection wouldn't I have a fever or some pain or something? I feel fine other than concerned that my disregard for the doctor's orders may have affected my recovery!

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

If you have an infection, yes, at some point you will probably begin to have pain and fever, but it is better to have your doctor check and see if anything looks amiss right now, that way he can go ahead and do something preventative.

If it were me, I would call back and get the first appointment I could. It is very possible that you are fine, but I would not feel ok about it till I had my doctor take a look.

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

Why are you trying to find any reason to not go to the ER. You know you did a big no no. Your health is important. If I had this happen to me, my arse would be in the ER.

If you've started bleeding after sex, especially since you are only at the 2 week mark, you need to go to the doctor/ER asap. Just because you aren't running a fever or in pain, you have done some kind of damage to cause the bleeding. It will just take a little more time for the infection to show signs. Its very possible you've opened up the cuff (if you have one) and will need to have it re-stitched.

You can't hide what you did, pass it off like its nothing and hope it will just go away. Accept responsibility and get yourself healed.

Re: started bleeding 2 weeks post-op after sex

I'm still trying to comprehend wanting sex at 2 weeks post op. im glad your recovery has been good and you felt well enough to want to. But like everyone has said it was much too early. Please have your doc take a look to make sure you didn't damage anything.
