Bladder cramping, but no UTI

At my 2 wk appt, I was having cramping when I voided my bladder, no burning and they found some blood in my urine. I took a round of anitbiotics, the Dr said my numbers were low from the culture, but because of the blood present a UTI was suspected. Two weeks after the antibiotics, the cramping returned. It only happens when my bladder empties, then I have dull crampy pains all through my abdomen. But it does not happen everytime only sometimes. I returned to the Dr and the urine culture was clean, so no UTI. I asked if this could just be connected to the healing that is still going on from my hysterectomy, but he said the two are not related and referred me to a urologist. But after returning home I did read on a medical website that bladder spasms can happen after abdominal surgeries like a hysterectomy.

Has anyone else experienced this? Has it gone away with more time healing or is it really something wrong that I need to have diagnosed? Opinions?

Re: Bladder cramping, but no UTI

Interstitial cystitis is a possibility. Certain acidic foods can irritate the bladder causing spasms or frequency. A urologist could give a more definitive diagnosis. I've had bladder issues that my gyn thought may be IC over the past 1 1/2 years. I had hoped my TVH would help that as my uterus was pushing on my bladder causing frequency. I don;t really have the frequency now(except for when dr. put me on metrogel) but I feel a little pressure sometimes which I think is due to the bloating of swelly belly. I will keep an eye on it the next few months while I heal and if I want a definite diagnosis I may bite the bullet and see a urologist. If it is IC I'd rather manage it through diet which does help. Check out the ic-network.com website for info.

Re: Bladder cramping, but no UTI

I will be 4 weeks post op tomorrow and I still have spasms when I urinate sometimes. I saw my doctor yesterday and he said it was probably just part of my healing process. I had to have several catheters after my surgery to get it woke up again so he said we would wait and see how I am at my next appt. Let us know how everything goes.

Re: Bladder cramping, but no UTI

HI ,

Wow, just a little anatomy ... the bladder is right next to the uterus. During surgery everything gets moved around. bladder spasms are very painful or very annoying. My doc said everything is shifting after surgery and it will take time to find a new place. If you can get in to see a good urologist you will get relief much faster. Good luck and I hope you heal quickly....

Re: Bladder cramping, but no UTI

I'm still having spams at 4 weeks out. I thought I had a UTI to begin with. The doctor gave me Detrol the week after surgery for them. It helped a lot. He called in some more Detrol today and said it might take a couple of months for the bladder to start back acting normal again.

Re: Bladder cramping, but no UTI

Thank you =) I really suspect it will subside as I continue to heal, and it seems that there are others out there that experience this also. It's nice to know that this is not abnormal, and that there are others that have had this.
If it does not, I do have the referral to fall back on.

Re: Bladder cramping, but no UTI

Just to add my story I had a uti 2 weeks after surgery abx cleared that right up but I still had symptoms my OB/GYN said bladder spasms aka cramping.... I chose to take some uristat (over the counter) to help when it got really bothersome then at my 8 wk ck up it was still going on and a little more bothersome so he gave me medication to try for it if I wanted and he too said it was prob a result of the surgery... I chose to stick it out and not take the meds and with in 10 wks post op it had subsided... now I have chronic uti's so my history is extremely long! I would say try some Uristat is and over the counter numbing medication that will turn your urine bright orange/red and see if that will calm it down some ... good luck and hopefully it will subside!
