Re: 4th level dressage rider-preop + worried about recovery time!

People who do not ride do not understand the level of fitness required to ride effectively. They also don't realize how strong we are going in to surgery. I am so excited for this spring to really get back to it. I miss my time in the saddle!

How nice to have so much help keeping your horse going! That will help tremendously! My horse is starting to get really naughty so it's definitely time to start working. He stands in his pasture and stares at the house whenever I'm there as though he can will me to come out and get him. When I do bring him in to groom him he's so excited he dances around like a 4 year old...and he's 12! It's cute and it makes me feel loved. He had a very unexpected colic surgery last year so he and I can comiserate about how crappy 'stall rest' was. Best wishes and keep us posted!

Re: 4th level dressage rider-preop + worried about recovery time!

I had LSH about 4 weeks ago. I still have problems riding in the car because the bumps hurt. I am just starting to use my abs to do things. Your core is probably in way better condition than mine was (I was pretty much bedridden for 2 months before surgery and haven't had any energy for almost 2 years so just went to work) and you may manage to use it a lot quicker than I can.

Don't rush it. You only get one chance to heal. Better to not ride for a while and get well instead of prolonging your recovery.

Thanks Whirlygig...will definitely take my time healing before hopping back on. It is so hard to wait and watch though.

Soleil11...Yes I am super lucky to have my trainers! I bet your students feel the same way about you also! Sorry about your "baby" needing colic surgery last year. I can only imagine how hard that must have been, but it sounds like he is super healthy now, albeit a little naughty!! I bet he misses you and the attention as much as you miss riding him. It's too bad that you don't have a student that could ride him for you while you recover. Just remember that it is only 6-8 weeks out of his/your whole career. You can remind me of the same thing in April!! My guy is going to be 17 next month. I bought him when he was 10 and have been so lucky to have him ever since! He has been a great "trainer" for me...patient and willing! Keep me posted on your recovery.

Re: 4th level dressage rider-preop + worried about recovery time!

I am so glad to see other equestrians on here. I actually did a search to see if anyone had asked about recovery times and riding and found this. I have a four year Missouri Fox Trotter old who is green, but more quiet and dependable than most seasoned horses. She knows when I hurt and walks on eggshells. We are also right on the verge of purchasing her half-sister who we have handled a lot and done a lot of ground work woth, but she hasn't actually been ridden yet. This surgery may put that on hold...I just don't know yet. I was planning on showing these girls this year....it looks like that may not be such a good idea. Uuuug! The flip side is that I have felt like crap and hurt so bad that I have only been riding a couple of times a month...I look forward to that changing!
