Hysterectomy and herniated disc

I am supposed to have a laparoscopic hysterectomy for fibroids (also a retroverted uterus). Had to put the surgery off for a while due to family illness and work concerns. Since found out I have one herniated disc that is causing some back pain. My question: Has anyone heard of hysterectomy for fibroids, retroverted/enlarged uterus either helping or hurting a spinal disc problem?

Re: Hysterectomy and herniated disc

I will tell you that I am only 3.5 weeks postop, but before my uterus would put pressure on my sciatic nerve causing my whole leg to go numb... I have had some back pain, but I think it's bc of surgery... My leg has not went numb since... I really think the hyster may have solved my problem...

Re: Hysterectomy and herniated disc

I have a herniated disk and had experienced a horrible period of sciatica a few months before my hysterectomy. My uterus was also retroverted and slightly enlarged, I also had fibroids and suspected adenomyosis. I made sure my doctor was completely aware of my disk and he made sure I was handled very carefully during surgery. I did experience a backache about 4 days after my surgery and it lasted about 3 days. My primary care doctor gave me muscle relaxers and it helped me.

When discussing my hysterectomy, I asked my doctor if I might see improvement in my back issues and he was honest in replying that he didn't really know. It actually has.

Obviously, there are no guarantees, but I hope it helps you.

Thanks for the replies and words of encouragement. It's encouraging to see, Deb, that your hysterectomy was around seven years ago, and it sounds like your back is still doing better.
