fallopian tube removal

My surgery plans have changed a couple of times during the process. Now the doctor plans to leave my ovaries and cervix in place. Which is great! This is the time a family bombshell of sorts gets dropped on me: my grandmother died of ovarian cancer, and no one ever told me or my sister, who ALSO has had a long history of female troubles. Aside from being pretty honkerblonked - it seems sort of important - I am wondering about changing my surgery plan AGAIN, and this only a few days before.

No one else in may family has had breast or ovarian cancer. No, men and women alike keel over from heart disease. My grandmother was quite old when she developed it, and had undergone some pretty wacked out treatments for her fibroids in the 1930s, including high powered UV lights and lots of pelvic xrays. I have read that radiation can increase your risk, and I think she had loads of that. I know that a second degree relative makes my risk only moderately higher, but I've also never had children, which raises it again.

My question, and I do have one, is for those of you pondering keeping your ovaries. I have just read that removing the fallopian tubes but leaving the ovaries can reduce the cancer risk by a lot. Have any of your doctors talked about tube removal? How much more complicated does it make the surgery? Has it been recommended to any of you?

At the very least, this has encouraged my sister to visit her doctor, so that's a positive result!
