No 6 week check up, how do I know Im healed?

Hi, am now just over 6 weeks post op (TAH/BSO). I live in England & wondered if anyone else over here had a 6 week check up? I appear to have just been discharged on the day I left hospital & have heard nothing since. I saw my the other day but she didnt mention anything about a check up. How do I know if my cervical cuff is healed enough to have sex? Am starting to get a bit worried as my after care has been more or less non-existant! (I got a leaflet about pelvic floor exercises & told not to lift but thats about it!) I would be very grateful for any advice
Thanx
Deb

Re: No 6 week check up, how do I know Im healed?

Hi debthepleb

I would ring the hospital because you should definitely have a check-up with the surgeon's team. My op was the week before yours and I am going for my check-up next Friday (probably a bit delayed due to holidays).

I also had a letter the day before Christmas Eve informing me that the pathology had all come back normal, which was the best present I could have had.

Hope you get the mix-up sorted out.

Re: No 6 week check up, how do I know Im healed?

Hi Debs
I live in England and I'm struggling with the lack of after care too.I was only told on discharge to not drive or vacuum for 6 weeks, and to go to my GP surgery to have my stitch removed, which I did. The practice nurse was surprised I needed stitch out on day 5 (continual beaded stitch) and because it was just after christmas she didn't have any notes to refer to and ended up phoning the ward for confirmation to remove it.
I have no follow up appointment planned with the consultant - was just told I would get a letter with pathology results in the middle of January.
I have made an appointment with my GP surgery for 1 Feb because my sick note runs out then, and am thinking of asking for an examination to see if I'm healing ok.
I have found this site VERY useful and am so glad it is here to refer to.
Good luck
Sarah x

Hi Sarah, yeah my nurse was surprised when i went for my stitch out after 5 days too. In fact she told me to wait 7 days! I saw my doctor last week n she said wait 12 weeks to have sex (!!!) but showed no interest in checking the healing n didnt even look at my scar!! Am so not impressed x

Re: No 6 week check up, how do I know Im healed?

I had a 6 week check with my surgeon and he did not do an internal exam. He had a look at my external incision and that was all. He didn't even really ask how I was feeling. I just asked him if I was free to do anything I liked and he said - Yes!
I would go by your symptoms - pain, discharge, etc as a guide to how you have healed.

Hi all, I too am in the UK and have had no aftercare as yet. I have an appointment with my consultant on the 8th March which will be 13 weeks after my surgery. I have had no pathology results either I have to see my GP 21st Jan as my sick note runs out then so I will see what he says.

Re: No 6 week check up, how do I know Im healed?

I had my check-up yesterday. The surgeon (not the chap who actually operated on me) asked me how I'd been so I reported daily bms, orgasms, no infection in the wound, etc.

He asked me if there was any blood, to which I replied no and at that point he decided that an internal exam was not necessary and I could go without if I wished. I had gone prepared for an internal so I asked him to do one for my peace of mind so he did and said it all looked as it should. I'm now discharged to GP care, if needed.

So there's not a lot to it. If you feel it would help you I would definitely see my GP and they will get a check-up sorted out for you.

Re: No 6 week check up, how do I know Im healed?

I am not having a 6 week ck either I am in the US. I had a 2 week next appt isn't until feb26. Gyno just told me what to avoid like I aldready have been vacuum and lifting etc. cleared for sex at 6 weeks. Any pain or bleeding or fever after that point to call?? Kind of nervous about no appt but I am feeling good! So I guess I will do things gradually however I clean for 2 elderly ppl and carry a vacuum up 3 flights of stairs. We shall see how that goes.

Good luck to you ladies!!
